Title: Gospel of John [17:7-8]. The Lord's priestly prayer; part 6. 2PE 1:4-11; DEU 6:10-15; Isa 55.

JOH 17:1 These things Jesus spoke; and lifting up His eyes to heaven, He said, "Father, the hour has come; glorify Thy Son, that the Son may glorify Thee,

JOH 17:2 even as Thou gavest Him authority over all mankind, that to all whom Thou hast given Him, He may give eternal life.

JOH 17:3 "And this is eternal life, that they may know Thee, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom Thou hast sent.

JOH 17:4 "I glorified Thee on the earth, having accomplished the work which Thou hast given Me to do.

JOH 17:5 "And now, glorify Thou Me together with Thyself, Father, with the glory which I had with Thee before the world was.

JOH 17:6 "I manifested Thy name [person and character] to the men whom Thou gavest Me out of the world; Thine they were, and Thou gavest them to Me, and they have kept Thy word.

All creatures belong to the Father and He has a right to do with them as seems best to Him. He chose these men to be apostles to the Savior and to carry the gospel to the ends of the earth amid great persecution and physical death.

God has a right to appoint a believer to any labor, however humble, hazardous, or wearisome through which He promotes His glory and honors His name.

JOH 17:7 "Now they have come to know that everything Thou hast given Me is from Thee;

The humanity of Christ did not originate anything in His incarnation. He relied completely on the Father to supply all things.

Even His human body was prepared by the Father. We work and labor and serve as He did but we do not originate anything. All these things are gifts. The question is, do we see all things as gifts?

HEB 10:5

Therefore, when He comes into the world, He says,

"Sacrifice and offering Thou hast not desired,

But a body Thou hast prepared for Me;

2CO 9:10

Now He who supplies seed to the sower and bread for food, will supply and multiply your seed for sowing and increase the harvest of your righteousness;

This would also apply to the doctrines that you are learning at any given time. God doesn't ask you to make a syllabus for your learning. The Spirit speaks as He will to each congregation.

Php 4:19

And my God shall supply all your needs according to His riches in glory in Christ Jesus.

If we realized that all things are gifts from God we would be thankful for all things:

1TH 5:18

in everything give thanks; for this is God's will for you in Christ Jesus

2PE 1:4 For by these He has granted to us His precious and magnificent promises, in order that by them you might become partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world by lust.

2PE 1:5 Now for this very reason also, applying all diligence, in your faith supply [epichoregeo (aorist active imperative) = act upon what God supplies] moral excellence [virtue], and in your moral excellence, knowledge;

"supply" - evpicorhge,w[epichoregeo; aorist active imperative] = to supply fully and abundantly. Used for the financial supplier of ancient Greek drama productions.

Each believer's life is a story that God is writing. He supplies everything, as He did to the humanity of Christ, so that we may actively supply divine virtue to our story. It's a command and the active voice puts our volition at the crux of the matter between God's supply and our taking that which He has given and acting upon them in faith.

2PE 1:6 and in your knowledge, self-control [what is learned is put into practice], and in your self-control, perseverance [hupomone], and in your perseverance, godliness [well devotedness];

2PE 1:7 and in your godliness, brotherly kindness [philedelphia], and in your brotherly kindness, love [agape].

Supply - divine virtue [fruit of the Spirit]; knowledge of the Son and Father; self-control [acting upon knowledge]; patience and perseverance; well devotedness; brotherly love; virtue love.

2PE 1:8 For if these qualities are yours and are increasing, they render you neither useless nor unfruitful in the true knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ [experience of eternal life; useful to the Master].

2 Tim 2:21 Therefore, if anyone cleanses himself from these things, he will be a vessel for honor, sanctified, useful to the Master, prepared for every good work.

2PE 1:9 For he who lacks these qualities is blind or short-sighted [can't see past himself], having forgotten his purification from his former sins [forgot the gifts that the Father supplied - from the atonement flows all the gifts to the believer].

"forgotten his purification" - from His atonement flows all the gifts to the believer. To forget them is to climb back into the habits of the OSN - can't see past himself.

2PE 1:10 Therefore, brethren, be all the more diligent to make certain about His calling and choosing you; for as long as you practice these things, you will never stumble;

2PE 1:11 for in this way the entrance into the eternal kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ will be abundantly supplied to you.

DEU 6:10 "Then it shall come about when the Lord your God brings you into the land which He swore to your fathers, Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, to give you, great and splendid cities which you did not build,

DEU 6:11 and houses full of all good things which you did not fill, and hewn cisterns which you did not dig, vineyards and olive trees which you did not plant, and you shall eat and be satisfied,

DEU 6:12 then watch yourself, lest you forget the Lord who brought you from the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery.

DEU 6:13 You shall fear only the Lord your God; and you shall worship Him, and swear by His name.

DEU 6:14 You shall not follow other gods, any of the gods of the peoples who surround you,

JOH 17:3

"And this is eternal life, that they may know Thee, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom Thou hast sent.

1JO 5:20-21

This is the true God and eternal life. Little children, guard yourselves from idols.

DEU 6:15 for the Lord your God in the midst of you is a jealous God; otherwise the anger of the Lord your God will be kindled against you, and He will wipe you off the face of the earth [sin unto death; not accomplishing His will].

Christ the King was Christ the servant. Arrogance blinds a person and even in a church, and could we not call Jesus and the twelve a church, arrogance can cause members to compete with one another rather than serve one another. People can use doctrine in arrogance and compete with it; "I'm the smartest, I'm the most spiritual, I have the most advanced and complex doctrine and am beyond the simplicity…." ad nausea. "

LUK 22:24-27

And there arose also a dispute among them as to which one of them was regarded to be greatest. 25 And He said to them, "The kings of the Gentiles lord it over them; and those who have authority over them are called 'Benefactors.' 26 "But not so with you, but let him who is the greatest among you become as the youngest, and the leader as the servant. 27 "For who is greater, the one who reclines at the table, or the one who serves? Is it not the one who reclines at the table? But I am among you as the one who serves.

Matt 23:11-12

"But the greatest among you shall be your servant. 12 "And whoever exalts himself shall be humbled; and whoever humbles himself shall be exalted.

Every time we sit at this table we remember servanthood and that there is only one Lord of all who displayed His magnificence and greatness through servility.

1 Cor 11:23-26

 For I received from the Lord that which I also delivered to you, that the Lord Jesus in the night in which He was betrayed took bread; 24 and when He had given thanks, He broke it, and said, "This is My body, which is for you; do this in remembrance of Me."  25 In the same way He took the cup also, after supper, saying, "This cup is the new covenant in My blood; do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me."  26 For as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the Lord's death until He comes.
