Mat 5:17-20, Your Burden Fell on God.

Idea: Jesus’ fulfillment of the law on the cross fulfilled all ceremonial law and, for believers, all moral law by the Holy Spirit. 

 

The Lord Jesus fulfilled the Hebrew Bible; the law and the prophets. 

 

He did so in birth, His life, His teaching and example, His cross, death, burial, resurrection, and session …and His second coming, Millennial reign, and final judgment and the eternal state. All of this is contained in the Hebrew Bible, which should not surprise us.

 

The HB is not incomplete. It has the beginning and the end. The Lord fulfills and the NT fills in all the details. 

 

The Law was composed of three parts. 

 

Moral - eternally what is right. 

 

Judicial - for a theocracy. (There are no theocracies in this age.) However, prosperity and freedom are found in the manner of God’s governing laws for Israel (nations live and die by how they sow and reap). 

 

Ceremonial - Tabernacle, food laws, washings, feasts, Sabbath, etc. 

 

Jesus Christ fulfilled the law concerning sin and the ceremonial law at the same time at the cross. 

 

He fulfilled the law concerning sin by being the Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world (Heb 2). 

 

The cross can only be understood through the law. 

 

He was enduring in His own body the penalty prescribed by the holy law of God for the sin of man. 

 

The penalty for sin, for breaking the law was death. 

 

The punishment for sin had to be carried out and could not be put aside. 

 

Life in God’s image must be pure. Anything else must suffer the penalty of death (sounds very harsh, but holiness is absolute).

 

The ceremonial law all pointed to His death, burial, and resurrection. When He died for sin, He fulfilled those as well. 

 

By fulfilling the law, He justified and fulfilled those who believed in Him. 

 

In this way He fulfilled the moral code of the law for us. Morals we live by, but even more than Israel since we now can see the heart of the law. 

 

He removed our sins and gave us the Holy Spirit within (ROM 8:1-4). 

 

The Holy Spirit gives us a love of the laws of God and a desire and power to live them according to God’s heart, ROM 8:12-17. 

 

It is a grace gift to the love God and His laws, i.e. keeping His commandments. It makes us thankful, not arrogant and judgy.

 

Flesh cannot submit to the law of God, ROM 8:6-8.

 

To the Spirit indwelled, God promised to write the law on their hearts (the imagery of no longer on tablets but on the heart, indicating also, to the heart of the law), HEB 8:10. 

 

The law (moral code) is not opposed to grace. 

 

A covenant of law is opposed to a covenant of grace. 

 

The New Covenant vs. the old; HEB 8:7-13.

 

Old covenant has gone away. Not the old morals, which could not be called old, for they are eternal - you might as well call God old. 

 

False views of law (religion and legalism); of grace (antinomianism, licentiousness).

 

Fulfilled only happens through the cross of Christ.
