Title: Gospel of John [16:12-15]. The Doctrine of the HS, part 67 - Satan. ROM 5:21; 13:14; 2CO 7:1; GAL 6:8.

The sin nature. Every child of Adam possesses Adam's nature, with all its predisposition to sin.

The utter dependence of every soul upon the Spirit for victory is not only a result of the foes without, but is occasioned as well by the weakness within.

There are sins and the sin nature. The sin nature is the poison while the sins are the boils that are caused by the poison.

Designated as “sin” (singular);

ROM 5:12 Therefore, just as through one man sin entered into the world, and death through sin, and so death spread to all men, because all sinned —

Fallen man would rather run his own affairs badly, even tragically, than submit to the benign government of God. Only by long association with God in Christ can we come to place utter dependence upon the Lord, forsake all human endeavor, mount the wings of the eagle and be carried by the love of God, who does everything for us.

Only when we learn that God has swept away all human claims and all obstacles, can we understand the terms which God uses to express His free-flowing grace.

Sin - everything that was against us - has been punished in Christ and removed from us. Since the work is finished, all merit and works by ourselves has been cursed and rejected by God. With that done the overflow of grace cannot be stopped.

ROM 5:21 that, as sin reigned in death, even so grace might reign through righteousness to eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.

1JO 1:8

If we say that we have no sin, we are deceiving ourselves, and the truth is not in us.

Designated as the Adamic nature or the flesh:

ROM 13:14 But put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh in regard to its lusts.

2CO 7:1 Therefore, having these promises, beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from all defilement of flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God.

GAL 6:8 For the one who sows to his own flesh shall from the flesh reap corruption, but the one who sows to the Spirit shall from the Spirit reap eternal life.

Designated as the old man:

ROM 6:5 For if we have become united with Him in the likeness of His death, certainly we shall be also in the likeness of His resurrection,

ROM 6:6 knowing this, that our old self was crucified with Him, that our body of sin might be done away with, that we should no longer be slaves to sin;

ROM 6:7 for he who has died is freed from sin.

These references are to the human nature, including soul, spirit, and body. The whole of it is corrupted by our fall.

When the word sin is found in the singular as in Rom 6 and 7, for instance, it may be understood as a reference to the nature rather than the act.

The sin nature is the source of all evil within, that which desires sin and gives ear to the devil.

A clear understanding of this doctrine is essential to realizing the need for walking by the Spirit.

Practically all heresies characterizing the holiness movement and false doctrines of sanctification, eradication, or perfectionism have their origin in a failure to comprehend the Scriptural teaching regarding the sin nature.

So as we conclude this doctrine of God the Holy Spirit we note that the filling of the Holy Spirit has several glorious results.

Results of being filled with the Spirit:

Progressive sanctification: continual growth in the character that is Christ's as revealed in the fruit of the Spirit.

Continual growth to the maturity that is conformity to the image of Christ is solely the undertaking of God the Holy Spirit when He is not resisted in the life of the believer. This becomes an experience in the believer's life when he recognizes the fruit of the Spirit. As we produce fruit we know to excel still more.

Teaching: continual illumination of the holy Scriptures. Its divine Author is its finest teacher.

God the Holy Spirit has been given the commission to teach us the scriptures or the mind of Christ and nothing more. He is the Author of the scriptures so it is only fitting that He be its teacher. Revelation of the deep things of God come only through Him.

Guidance: continual application of divine truths known to the circumstances of life in making good decisions and serving God and His people.

With learning comes application of knowledge and wisdom. When and how to apply the truth of the word of God is a part of the Spirit's ministry. As He fills the believer the believer has a flow of living water that applies doctrine to the right circumstances of life and makes good decisions.

Assurance: continual assurance of our eternal life and destiny as children of God.

This is a progressive removal of all doubt about who you are in Christ as the Spirit bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God and if children, heirs also.

Worship: continual adoration of God by those who know Him.

In the minds of some Christians, worship is associated with earthly houses of worship, ritual, singing, and other common features of public worship. According to the scriptures, however, worship is the adoration of God by those who know Him. In this there is a wholehearted praise of His name in the soul and thanksgiving for all He has given and for His very person. In the command given in EPH 5:18 to be filled with the Spirit this very thing is stated immediately after. True worship therefore is only possible when filled with the Spirit. In quenching or grieving the Spirit we are praising something else besides God in our souls.

Prayer: a continual prosperity in prayer. Guidance in asking that which is of His will, praise and thanksgiving, adoration, and all in accordance with progressive sanctification.

Prayer is an intimate, personal outpouring of love and appreciation for God and love for His people. Therefore, the effectiveness of prayer is directly related to progressive sanctification. Effective prayer is not a ritual but a reality of a deep desire for a personal and intimate relationship with God the Father, the designer of the plan of angelic and human history. It is a desire to want to know His will and that same desire for others in the royal family. It is an understanding of the privilege that has been given to every believer to approach the throne of grace with boldness in order to find grace and mercy to help in time of need.

Service: continual service of God and His people and the function of the spiritual gift in the manner of Christ, the ultimate servant.

Service is eyes off of self and on the will of God as well as your surroundings in order to see the opportunities of service that God prepared beforehand for us to walk in. While the disciples were arguing in the upper room about who was the greatest, Christ dressed Himself in a slave's apron and washed their feet. He asked them if they knew what He had done. When none answered He said that if the Lord and Teacher washed your feet then you should wash one another's feet and so a slave is not greater than his Master. The Master served us so that we could be forgiven of all sin and completely cleansed. We do not do that for others but in many other ways we can serve one another. If the Master did so in such a surpassing way, then we who are not greater than He, should do the same.
