The Lord's prayer is found in John 17, Doctrine of prayer part 12

Class Outline:

/8. The recorded prayers of the apostle Paul.\

Now we turn to Paul’s other recorded prayer in Ephesians.

EPH 1:15 For this reason I too, having heard of the faith in the Lord Jesus which exists among you, and your love for all the saints,

EPH 1:16 do not cease giving thanks for you, while making mention [remembrance] of you in my prayers;

EPH 1:17 that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory [essence of God], may give to you a spirit of wisdom [human spirit full of doctrine and ready to circulate that doctrine into the heart for application]and of revelation [personal revelation by means of the HS] in the knowledge [epignosis]of Him.

EPH 1:18 I pray that the eyes of your heart [the eyes of your right lobe is your spiritual insight and understanding. It is your own comprehension of your purpose and destiny]may be enlightened [the light of Christ rises in your heart],so that you may know [know absolutely]what is the hope of His calling [confident expectation of your election to God’s highest and best],what are the riches of the glory of His inheritance in the saints [know absolutely your inheritance in Christ - God’s glory],

In verse 19 the verb, perfect active infinitive of oida, still applies.

As in Paul’s prayer in Eph 3 he asks that we receive the inheritance and we tap into the power. The inheritance will not bring happiness if the power is not mastered.

EPH 1:19and [that you may know absolutely]what is the surpassing greatness of His power toward us who believe. These are in accordance with the working of the strength of His might

/God’s power is limitless and therefore so is the potential of your spiritual life. “surpassing greatness” = over the top magnitude.\

[huperballo and megathos (attic Greek word referring to greatness in quality and not size or stature)]

This power is directed toward you and awaits your capacity.

There are four words for power in this verse:

EPH 1:19and [that you may know absolutely] what is the surpassing greatness of His power toward us who believe. These are in accordance with the working of the strength of His might

/ “power” - dunamis = inherent power of God

“working” - energeia = operational power of God

“strength” - kratos = ruling power/BD

“might” - ischus = endowed power/BD in heart.\

God is power. God chose to use His power. God chose to place His power within His word. God chose to parlay His power to us by giving us a system [GAP] by which His word can be metabolized in our hearts.

Paul is praying for believers to exploit this power.

Now Paul informs us how a perfect God could provide His perfect power to imperfect creatures.

EPH 1:20which He brought about [made operational]in Christ, when He [“when” is not in the original = “having”]raised Him from the dead, and seated Him at His right hand in the heavenly places,

/The session equals victory and victory means the spoils can be reaped. Though the enemy continues to fight a losing battle, we must rejoice in the solid victory.\

EPH 1:21far above all rule and authority and power and dominion, and every name that is named [this list refers to all categories of fallen angels],not only in this age [Chuch-age],but also in the one to come [Tribulation and Millennium].

EPH 1:22And He put all things in subjection under His feet, and gave Him as head over all things to the church,

EPH 1:23 which is His body, the fulness of Him who fills all in all.

/9. “The Lord’s Prayer is not the “Our Father” but the prayer of John 17.\

Matt 6:5 "And when you pray, you are not to be as the hypocrites; for they love to stand and pray in the synagogues and on the street corners, in order to be seen by men. Truly I say to you, they have their reward in full.

Matt 6:6 "But you, when you pray, go into your inner room, and when you have shut your door, pray to your Father who is in secret, and your Father who sees in secret will repay you.

Matt 6:7 "And when you are praying, do not use meaningless repetition, as the Gentiles do, for they suppose that they will be heard for their many words.

Matt 6:8 "Therefore do not be like them; for your Father knows what you need, before you ask Him.

Matt 6:9 Pray, then, in this way:

'Our Father who art in heaven, Hallowed be Thy name.

/ “in this way:” - houtos [houtos] = in this manner. This doesn’t mean to use these exact words, but rather after this pattern.\

All prayer is directed towards the Father and “in heaven” indicated our need for humility towards Him. He is in heaven and we are on earth. He is capable and we are incapable, therefore we need Him.

/ “Hallowed” - aorist passive imperative of hagiazo [hagiazo] = to be sanctified or set apart as holy. Aorist points to the time that you pray and you set God apart in fellowship and concentration.\

Thy name refers to His person or His essence.

Do I say this verbatim, no? But the pattern so far is right on, but it won’t be for long since this is pattern for the disciples before Israel rejected the Messiah. Therefore, some of the pattern given here does not apply to the Church-age.

Matt 6:10 'Thy kingdom come.

Thy will be done,

On earth as it is in heaven.

/This is an eschatological petition, meaning a request for the kingdom of Christ to be established. If Israel accepts her King then after the cross the Millennium will begin.\

/We cannot pray for the kingdom to come today since it cannot. Because of the rejection of Israel the Rapture must complete the church and then the Tribulation must complete and only then will Christ return to establish His kingdom.\

So when a believer today says this prayer verbatim he is revealing his ignorance of the plan of God, which is OK if he changes that ignorance to cognizance.

As the disciples are on the Mount with Christ the kingdom can come because the King was on the earth. Christ certainly knew from His understanding of OT prophecy that Israel would reject Him, but the disciples did not know this. He is teaching them the power of prayer in that it can affect the decree of God.

However, now that He is seated at the right hand of God, the kingdom cannot come until the Rapture, the cleansing of the bride, and all the events of the Tribulation are complete, making this part of the prayer impossible now.

Matt 6:10 'Thy kingdom come.

[Then we have] Thy will be done,

On earth as it is in heaven.

How will you know when the kingdom occurs? There is a second petition which amplifies the first — “Thy will be done on earth, as it is in heaven.” “Thy will” is the will of God. Do you think today, by any straining of the imagination, that the will of God is being accomplished on the earth as it is in heaven?

/God’s will done on earth is totally impossible. The devil is the ruler of this world and will rule it until the last phase of operation footstool when he and all demons will be cast off the earth. \

But the devil is the god of this world, he is the prince of the power of the air, and he will rule this world until the second advent.

And when the devil rules the world the will of God cannot be done on earth as it is in heaven; even among those who belong to God, believers, His will is not being accomplished on the earth.

/During the Millennium the resurrected Christ will rule the earth and then the will of God will be done under His authority.\

Matt 6:11'Give us this day our daily bread.

The translation of this verse is in question since the adjective translated “daily” is only found here and in the parallel verse in Luke 11:3. There is no other record of it is found outside the NT.

Most scholars believe the word to mean “for tomorrow” instead of daily.

There is no question that “this day,” means today. This word we find several times and the contexts give us a certain meaning.

Therefore the corrected translation must stand, though seemingly confusing:

/Matt 6:11 Give us today tomorrow’s bread. [corrected translation]\

Does this mean that the disciples as well as we should pray for our logistical needs for today and that they be as much as tomorrow?
