God's good has shown its power in the midst of gross evil and tenacious opposition.
This is the most quoted Psalm in the NT.
Vv. 1-3 is the statement of the rebels.
PSA 2:1 Why are the nations in an uproar, And the peoples devising a vain thing [opposing God or independence from Him]?
PSA 2:2 The kings of the earth take their stand [prepare for war], And the rulers take counsel together Against the Lord and against His Anointed:
PSA 2:3 "Let us tear their fetters apart, And cast away their cords from us!" [plural - God the Father and His Messiah, God the Son]
This is not rebellion against an abstract notion of God, but directly against the one true God and the one true Messiah - Christ.
Vv. 4-6 is the statement of the purpose of Jehovah. While there is chaos in the war zone, earth, there is peace in heaven.
PSA 2:4 He who sits in the heavens laughs, The Lord scoffs at them.
This rules out dualism. Men and angel that rage against God are absolutely no contest for God and they will be judged (Rev 6-19).
PSA 2:5 Then He will speak to them in His anger And terrify them in His fury:
PSA 2:6 "But as for Me, I have installed My King Upon Zion, My holy mountain."
Remember Psa 68 that was quoted in Eph 4 where He led captive the captives after the ark was installed by David, victorious over the Philistines and Jebusites, representing the ascension of Christ and the victorious procession of all OT saints.
PSA 68:16, 18
Why do you look with envy, O mountains with many peaks,
At the mountain which God has desired for His abode?
Surely, the Lord will dwell there forever ... Thou hast ascended on high, Thou hast led captive Thy captives;
In vs. 7 we have a dramatic change of voice to the Messiah.
PSA 2:7 "I will surely tell of the decree of the Lord: He said to Me, 'Thou art My Son, Today I have begotten Thee.
"decree [choq = statute, rule, law, or regulation] of the Lord" - the law of His eternal kingdom, the execution of which follows His resurrection and begins His dominion.
From Paul's message in the synagogue, verse 7 refers to the resurrection of Christ, therefore this means begotten from the virgin tomb in victory.
that God has fulfilled this promise to our children in that He raised up Jesus, as it is also written in the second Psalm,' Thou art My Son; today I have begotten Thee.'
The law of His eternal kingdom is not the Mosaic Law, for that He fulfilled and abolished. Christ was shrouded in the shadows of the Mosaic Law. The law of the King of kings and Lord of lords is the will of God to the church, the Tribulation, the Millennium, and forever in the eternal state. It is the resurrected Christ that is crowned King of kings and Lord of lords and so from that moment on the law of His eternal kingdom, given or decreed in eternity past, can be fully executed in time. The hidden part, the mystery doctrine of the CA, would now be revealed, the greatest witnesses for the kingdom exhibited as CA invisible heroes, the fulfillment of Israel's debt to God, the fulfillment of the unconditional promises to Israel, the final judgment of all of God's foes, and the ending of human history and the beginning of eternity future in a new heavens and new earth, and all of these performed by the King of kings and Lord of lords.
be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what the will of God is, that which is good and acceptable and perfect.
This dominion and law of His righteous kingdom is coupled with His inheritance as King. This is the result of the resurrection and is quoted in Heb 1.
HEB 1:1 God, after He spoke long ago to the fathers in the prophets in many portions and in many ways,
HEB 1:2 in these last days has spoken to us in His Son, whom He appointed heir of all things [EP], through whom also He made the world [aion (plural) = ages].
HEB 1:3 And He is the radiance of His glory and the exact representation of His nature, and upholds all things by the word of His power. When He had made purification of sins, He sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high [EF];
HEB 1:4 having become as much better than the angels [dominion], as He has inherited a more excellent name [title - King of kings and Lord of lords] than they.
HEB 1:5 For to which of the angels did He ever say,
"Thou art My Son,
Today I have begotten Thee"? [PSA 2:7 - resurrection]
Appropriate to His resurrection glory, this is also quoted by the Father at His transfiguration:
"and behold, a voice out of the cloud, saying, "This is My beloved Son, with whom I am well-pleased; listen to Him!"
All mankind and all the earth is given to Him as an inheritance and possession. For the unbeliever, He will judge them, for the believer, He will evaluate them and distribute the gifts of plunder as He sees according to the law of the kingdom, which is contained in the word of God.
"I will surely tell of the decree of the Lord: He said to Me, 'Thou art My Son, Today I have begotten Thee. 'Ask of Me, and I will surely give the nations as Thine inheritance, And the very ends of the earth as Thy possession.
JOH 5:19 Jesus therefore answered and was saying to them, "Truly, truly, I say to you, the Son can do nothing of Himself, unless it is something He sees the Father doing [I will tell of the decree of the Lord]; for whatever the Father does, these things the Son also does in like manner.
JOH 5:20 "For the Father loves the Son, and shows Him all things that He Himself is doing; and greater works than these will He show Him [Church?], that you may marvel.
JOH 5:21 "For just as the Father raises the dead and gives them life, even so the Son also gives life to whom He wishes [part of His inheritance].
JOH 5:22 "For not even the Father judges anyone, but He has given all judgment to the Son [part of His inheritance - the nations as thine inheritance],
JOH 5:23 in order that all may honor the Son, even as they honor the Father. He who does not honor the Son does not honor the Father who sent Him.
JOH 5:24 "Truly, truly, I say to you, he who hears My word, and believes Him who sent Me, has eternal life, and does not come into judgment, but has passed out of death into life.
JOH 5:25 "Truly, truly, I say to you, an hour is coming and now is, when the dead shall hear the voice of the Son of God; and those who hear shall live.
JOH 5:26 "For just as the Father has life in Himself, even so He gave to the Son also to have life in Himself;
JOH 5:27 and He gave Him authority to execute judgment, because He is the Son of Man.
JOH 5:28 "Do not marvel at this; for an hour is coming, in which all who are in the tombs shall hear His voice,
JOH 5:29 and shall come forth; those who did the good deeds to a resurrection of life, those who committed the evil deeds to a resurrection of judgment.
JOH 12:44 And Jesus cried out and said, "He who believes in Me does not believe in Me [alone], but in Him who sent Me.
In other words, He is not the Savior unless He is sent from heaven. A lot of people believe Him to be many things other than the Savior sent to the world by the Father.
JOH 12:45 "And he who beholds Me beholds the One who sent Me [I will tell of the law of the Lord].
JOH 12:46 "I have come as light into the world, that everyone who believes in Me may not remain in darkness.
JOH 12:47 "And if anyone hears My sayings, and does not keep them, I do not judge him; for I did not come to judge the world, but to save the world.
Before the resurrection He is not Judge but Savior. However, after the resurrection the King is Judge, and all judgments are written in His word.
He did not come to the earth condemning sinners. He hung out with the sinners and they loved Him. He came to seek and to save the lost. He condemned the self-righteousness and lies of the religious scribes, Sadducees, and Pharisees. They purposely misrepresented God while claiming to be the only mediators to God.
And since sin was judged in Him, sin is not a part of the judgment. The judgment at the last day is against those who do not believe in Him as the Savior of the world.
"And He, when He comes, will convict the world concerning sin, and righteousness, and judgment; concerning sin, because they do not believe in Me;
JOH 12:48 "He who rejects Me, and does not receive My sayings, has one who judges him; the word I spoke is what will judge him at the last day.
JOH 12:49 "For I did not speak on My own initiative, but the Father Himself who sent Me has given Me commandment, what to say, and what to speak.
JOH 12:50 "And I know that His commandment is eternal life [chief of the laws of the kingdom is eternal life through faith in Christ]; therefore the things I speak, I speak just as the Father has told Me."
PSA 2:7 "I will surely tell of the decree of the Lord: He said to Me, 'Thou art My Son, Today I have begotten Thee.
PSA 2:8 'Ask of Me, and I will surely give the nations as Thine inheritance, And the very ends of the earth as Thy possession.
PSA 2:9 'Thou shalt break them with a rod of iron, Thou shalt shatter them like earthenware.'" [enemies]
And from His mouth comes a sharp sword, so that with it He may smite the nations; and He will rule them with a rod of iron; and He treads the wine press of the fierce wrath of God, the Almighty. And on His robe and on His thigh He has a name written, "KING OF KINGS, AND LORD OF LORDS."
PSA 2:10 Now therefore, O kings, show discernment; Take warning, O judges of the earth.
PSA 2:11 Worship the Lord with reverence, And rejoice with trembling.
PSA 2:12 Do homage to the Son [faith in Him], lest He become angry, and you perish in the way, For His wrath may soon be kindled. How blessed are all who take refuge in Him!
There is the idea in the attempt to define permissive will as something good since the underlying foundation is God's will. But though this simplifies things for us, and rightly so for our finite minds, we should take our eyes off the word "will" and concentrate more on the word "permissive." If God decides to allow something that is not His sovereign desire then it cannot be good. Sin and evil are permitted but they are not good. I'm not belaboring this but merely attempting to make clear something that is very important in understanding God and His corrupted universe. Though God is wise enough and powerful enough to use sin and evil to His advantage (ex: divine discipline) He is never the author of it nor pleased with it nor is there a purpose for good in it. God alone is good. He does not need sin to occur to show it. God's goodness and grace overarches the sin and evil of this world and reveals itself in a dark place.
Was it Job's will or God's will that Job suffer the way he did?
And he still holds fast his integrity, although you incited Me against him, to ruin him without cause.
Jesus taught that bad things happen to good people and not always because they have sinned in some way.
LUK 13:1 Now on the same occasion there were some present who reported to Him about the Galileans, whose blood Pilate had mingled with their sacrifices.
This could refer to several occasions when the Jews protested policies of Pilate and some of the protestors were put to death.
LUK 13:2 And He answered and said to them, "Do you suppose that these Galileans were greater sinners than all other Galileans, because they suffered this fate?
In other words, was this a judgment of God? Is it a fact that all who suffer are being punished by God for some type of sin? This was the error of Job's friends. If this was so, how do we explain the suffering of the prophets, apostles, or even Christ?
LUK 13:3 "I tell you, no, but unless you repent, you will all likewise perish.
It is likely that Christ has the destruction of Jerusalem in mind here. The Lord later warned them to get out of the city when an army surrounded it. The point is that people die. People die tragically at times and none of us can know the absolute reason, so work out your own salvation with fear and trembling. Good and bad things happen to good and bad people.
God has a provision and a solution for every problem.
LUK 13:4 "Or do you suppose that those eighteen on whom the tower in Siloam fell and killed them, were worse culprits than all the men who live in Jerusalem?
Nothing is known of this incident, but whatever occurred it looks like an accident. If a tower falls on a person, they get in a car wreck, they get cancer very young and perish, is this discipline, an act of God, or is it a byproduct of the evil in this chaotic world? We can never tell, however, we are to know that God's grace can overcome any tragedy in this world.
LUK 13:5 "I tell you, no, but unless you repent, you will all likewise perish."
The NT has taught us over and over that we are to expect suffering especially when we are following God.
