Rebound revisited, part 3. 1Co 11:28; 1Jo 1:8-10; Eph 4:17; 2Ti 2:25

Class Outline:

Title: Rebound revisited, part 3. 1CO 11:28; 1JO 1:8-10; EPH 4:17; 2TI 2:25.

1.Judge yourself throughout, separating divine thoughts from sin and human good  1CO 11:31.

I will see the errors in my thinking, speech and action by means of God the HS’s war with my flesh and divine discipline if necessary, and then I will make the proper evaluations as I have learned them from my perception of the word of God.

Self evaluation or self judgment is not confession. I could determine myself guilty of a crime and confess nothing.

2.Acknowlege the sin, evil, wrong, error, human good, etc.

1JO 1:5 And this is the message we have heard from Him and announce to you, that God is light, and in Him there is no darkness at all.

 “darkness” - skoti,a[skotia] = darkness, secrecy.

The part of the world where faith in Christ does not exist is called the darkness.

JOH 1:5

And the light shines in the darkness [skotia], and the darkness did not comprehend it.

JOH 8:12

Again therefore Jesus spoke to them, saying, "I am the light of the world; he who follows [companion, follower, going in the same way] Me shall not walk in the darkness, but shall have the light of life."

Walking in darkness is not the same as being the darkness any more than acting like an unbeliever makes you an unbeliever.

Can a believer ever be darkness? If God is light and there is no darkness in Him at all and He indwells your body, the holy temple of God, then the believer cannot be darkness any more than he could be an unbeliever. Can he walk in the darkness? Most certainly, but that is like blindfolding oneself in a well lit room, you’re in the light but walking in darkness.

As we will see when we get to Rom 6, we yield or present ourselves to the dead OSN by our own choice. It does not overtake us, for it cannot, it is dead! When you get tempted and you acquiesce you are presenting yourself to a dead flesh and asking for orders.

ROM 6:13

and do not go on presenting the members of your body to sin as instruments of unrighteousness; but present yourselves to God as those alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness to God.

This was directly against Gnosticism which stated that the body was evil and could do nothing good.

“present” - pari, sthmi [paristemi; present active imperative] = to present, to yield, to set by something else, as a military word it means to present yourself for orders.

The unbeliever is classified as darkness, JOH 12:34-36; 44-46.

JOH 12:34 The multitude therefore answered Him, "We have heard out of the Law that the Christ is to remain forever; and how can You say, 'The Son of Man must be lifted up'? Who is this Son of Man?"

JOH 12:35 Jesus therefore said to them, "For a little while longer the light is among you. Walk while you have the light, that darkness may not overtake you; he who walks in the darkness does not know where he goes.

JOH 12:36 "While you have the light, believe in the light, in order that you may become sons of light."

JOH 12:44 And Jesus cried out and said, "He who believes in Me does not believe in Me, but in Him who sent Me.

JOH 12:45 "And he who beholds Me beholds the One who sent Me.

JOH 12:46 "I have come as light into the world, that everyone who believes in Me may not remain in darkness.

The believer can walk in darkness or abide in darkness even though he possesses the light of Christ within him, 1JO 2:7-11.

1JO 2:7 Beloved, I am not writing a new commandment to you, but an old commandment which you have had from the beginning [of the CA]; the old commandment is the word which you have heard.

1JO 2:8 On the other hand, I am writing a new commandment to you, which is true in Him and in you, because the darkness is passing away, and the true light is already shining.

1JO 2:9 The one who says he is in the light and yet hates his brother is in the darkness until now.

1JO 2:10 The one who loves his brother abides in the light and there is no cause for stumbling in him.

1JO 2:11 But the one who hates his brother is in the darkness and walks in the darkness, and does not know where he is going because the darkness has blinded his eyes.

Gnostics were haters, for they had no love, everything was about them alone.

One cannot separate a man from his thinking. If the organs are still functioning but the brain is dead then the man is dead. Christ is the light and His thinking is the light. In Christ I am always light, but thinking in opposition to Him puts me in the status of walking in darkness or abiding in darkness and that is a waste of time for the new creature in Christ.

1JO 1:6 If we say that we have fellowship with Him and yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth;

 “darkness” - skoto,j[skotos] = darkness, secrecy.

This is an older version of skotia, which John uses 18 times, but only here does he use skotos. They mean the same thing.

The darkness of the world:

MAT 4:14 This was to fulfill what was spoken through Isaiah the prophet, saying,

MAT 4:15 "The land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali,

By the way of the sea, beyond the Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles

MAT 4:16 "The people who were sitting in darkness saw a great light, And to those who were sitting in the land and shadow of death, Upon them a light dawned."

MAT 4:17 From that time Jesus began to preach and say, "Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand."

MAT 6:19 "Do not lay up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal.

MAT 6:20 "But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys, and where thieves do not break in or steal;

MAT 6:21 for where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.

MAT 6:22 "The lamp of the body is the eye; if therefore your eye is clear, your whole body will be full of light.

MAT 6:23 "But if your eye is bad, your whole body will be full of darkness. If therefore the light that is in you is darkness, how great is the darkness!

MAT 6:24 "No one can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will hold to one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and mammon.

ACT 26:18 [stated by Christ to Paul on the road to Damascus]

to open their eyes so that they may turn from darkness to light and from the dominion of Satan to God, in order that they may receive forgiveness of sins and an inheritance among those who have been sanctified by faith in Me.

COL 1:13-14

For He delivered us from the domain of darkness, and transferred us to the kingdom of His beloved Son, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.

The Lake of Fire:

MAT 25:28 Therefore take away the talent from him, and give it to the one who has the ten talents.'

MAT 25:29 "For to everyone who has shall more be given, and he shall have an abundance; but from the one who does not have, even what he does have shall be taken away.

MAT 25:30 "And cast out the worthless slave into the outer darkness; in that place there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.

A new creature with a lifestyle of darkness:

ROM 13:12

The night is almost gone, and the day is at hand. Let us therefore lay aside the deeds of darkness and put on the armor of light.

The unbeliever is darkness:

2CO 6:14 Do not be bound together with unbelievers; for what partnership have righteousness and lawlessness, or what fellowship has light with darkness?

2CO 6:15 Or what harmony has Christ with Belial, or what has a believer in common with an unbeliever?

The darkness: the world system, the unbeliever, and the Lake of Fire.

In each case there is no faith in Jesus Christ’s person or work.

The believer is always light by means of his position in Christ:

JOH 12:36

"While you have the light, believe in the light, in order that you may become sons of light."

But he may abide or walk in darkness when he is blind to the truth, by lack of faith, ignorance, or arrogance.

So John addresses that next:

A believer that is abiding in darkness or walking in darkness is out of fellowship with Christ and is either quenching or grieving the HS.

1JO 1:6 If we say that we have fellowship with Him and yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth;

The word say means just that, to say or to speak so in other words this type is saying that he has fellowship with Christ, but his lifestyle is one of darkness, and he’s only fooling himself.

“fellowship” - koinwni,a[koinonia] = fellowship, partnership, participation, sharing.

The root word means “common.” Since the scriptures always emphasize the word of God above all else, then we can confidently say that this word refers to common words or common thought.

1CO 1:9

God is faithful, through whom you were called into fellowship with His Son, Jesus Christ our Lord.

1CO 10:16

Is not the cup of blessing which we bless a sharing in the blood of Christ? Is not the bread which we break a sharing in the body of Christ?

2CO 6:14

Do not be bound together with unbelievers; for what partnership [fellowship] have righteousness and lawlessness, or what fellowship has light with darkness?

2CO 13:14

The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit, be with you all.

1JO 1:6 If we say that we have fellowship with Him and yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth;

1JO 1:7 but if we walk in the light as He Himself is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus His Son cleanses us from all sin.

This would seem to say that if we walk in the light then the blood of Jesus His Son cleanses us from all sin. Yet the blood of Jesus His Son has cleansed us from all sin.

EPH 1:7-8

In Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of His grace, which He lavished upon us.

More than any other epistle we know that John wrote this epistle for a very specific purpose.

John has written this epistle to point out false teachers who are influenced by Gnosticism and to refute Gnosticism, which taught that all matter was evil and therefore the body was evil. So they fell into two camps, those who chose lasciviousness by concluding that the body could only do evil so why try and stop it and the second camp were those who chose asceticism by concluding that if the body was deprived enough then it wouldn’t contaminate the spirit as much and so the fullness of the logos could be reached. The first camp, those who chose lasciviousness, still attempted to gain the fullness of the logos in their spirits while giving the body whatever it desired or lusted for.

John is saying that if you walked in the light then you would know that the blood of Jesus cleanses us from all sin and so the body can be used as an instrument of righteousness.

ROM 6:12 Therefore do not let sin reign in your mortal body that you should obey its lusts,

ROM 6:13 and do not go on presenting [yielding, presenting yourself for orders] the members of your body to sin as instruments of unrighteousness; but present yourselves to God as those alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness to God.

ROM 6:14 For sin shall not be master over you, for you are not under law, but under grace.

1CO 6:13

Yet the body is not for immorality, but for the Lord; and the Lord is for the body.

The next group says that have no sin nature at all.

Gnosticism was a heresy far more subtle and dangerous than any that had appeared during the early years of the church. It became so widespread that by the beginning of the 3 rd cent. A.D. most of the intellectual Christian congregations throughout the Roman Empire were to some degree infected by it. [International Standard Bible Encyclopedia; Revised]
