Matt 6:9 "Pray, then, in this way [according to this pattern]:

'Our Father who art in heaven, Hallowed [sanctified] be Thy name.

 

Matt 6:10 'Thy kingdom come.

Thy will be done,

On earth as it is in heaven.

 

Matt 6:11 'Give us this day our daily bread.

 

Matt 6:12 'And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors.

 

The last petition in this model prayer:

 

Matt 6:13 'And do not lead us into temptation [peirasmo,j; peirasmos], but deliver us from evil. [For Thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen.]' not in the original.

 

The key to this verse is the word “evil”. It means a system of thinking that causes pain, malignancy, sorrow, and that which does evil and harm.

 

God does not want to put us in such a place, but yet a place does exist because of evil creatures. Why would God’s universe, filled with His children fall under such evil? It is because in the AC His permissive will allows.

 

This means that certain trials and temptations come upon you, not because God willed it, but because it must be allowed in a world of fallen creatures who possess a free will.

 

 “temptation” - peirasmo,j[peirasmos] = a trial, test, or temptation that discovers good or evil, strength or weakness in a person or thing.

 

There are two words in the Greek New Testament both meaning “to test;” dokimazo and peirazo.

 

It is important in the interests of accurate interpretation, to distinguish between them, since they refer to different kinds of testings.

 

Dokimazo refers to the act of testing someone or something for the purpose of approving it. [never used with satan and almost always used with God] Example.

 

The word has in it the idea of proving a thing whether it be worthy to be received or not. In classical Greek, it is the technical word for putting money to the test.

 

In the New Testament almost always it implies that the proof is victoriously surmounted. The word further implies that the trial itself was made in the expectation and hope that the result is positive and the thing is proven to be true.

 

1 Peter 1:6 In this you greatly rejoice, even though now for a little while, if necessary, you have been distressed by various trials,

 

1 Peter 1:7 that the proof [dokimion - noun form] of your faith, being more precious than gold which is perishable, even though tested [dokimazo] by fire, may be found to result in praise and glory and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ;

 

 

Peirazo means to test for good or evil with the hope that the person would break down under the test. [always used of satan an seldom used of God] Example

 

Periazmos is the testing, tempting, and trying of satan and the KOD who hope to get the believer involved in evil thinking, which includes sin but is not isolated to sin. This is a part of the permissive will of God.

 

1 Cor 10:13 No temptation [peirasmos]has overtaken [unexpected] you but such as is common to man; and God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted [peirazo] beyond what you are able, but with the temptation [peirasmos]will provide the way of escape also, that you may be able to endure it.

 

One of the rules of the AC is that God will not allow the testing to evil to exceed our capacity to pass it. His way of escape is always the application of pertinent doctrine while remaining in the test.

 

Every believer is exposed to the evil in the world, positive and negative believers. If the believer neglects doctrine the evil will come and he will be consumed by it having no power to defeat its beckoning to false doctrines.

 

While it is not God’s desire, He is not defeated. Christ was submitted to the same evils and God always makes provision.

 

HEB 2:18

For since He Himself was tempted in that which He has suffered, He is able to come to the aid of those who are tempted.

 

Rather than leading us into temptation, God allows temptation under His permissive will, but provides a solution through doctrine for each one. This is the prayer in Matt 6:13.

 

HEB 3:8

Do not harden your hearts as when they provoked Me,

As in the day of trial [temptation] in the wilderness,

 

For the negative believer there is depressing failure as with the exodus.

 

However, for the positive believer, temptations to evil are sources of victory and resulting joy.

 

James 1:2 Consider it all joy, my brethren, when you encounter various trials,

 

 “encounter” - peripi,ptw[peripipto] to fall into something by chance. This refers to unexpected, unpredicted trials, and therefore trials that fall under the permissive will of God.

 

James 1:3 knowing that the testing of your faith produces endurance.

 

James 1:4 And let endurance have its perfect result, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing.

 

James 1:5 But if any of you lacks wisdom [in context: the application of PSD’s that you’ve already metabolized], let him ask of God, who gives to all men generously and without reproach, and it will be given to him.

 

The confidence in this prayer is the promise: 2 Peter 2:9

the Lord knows how to rescue the godly from temptation,

 

James 1:6 But let him ask in faith without any doubting [God’s word doesn’t deliver], for the one who doubts is like the surf of the sea driven and tossed by the wind.

 

James 1:7 For let not that man expect that he will receive anything from the Lord,

 

James 1:8 being a double-minded man, unstable in all his ways.

 

And, these trials or temptations are a fact of life for the believer.

 

1 Peter 4:12

Beloved, do not be surprised at the fiery ordeal among you, which comes upon you for your testing [peirasmon - tempting you to evil], as though some strange thing were happening to you;

 

It’s not ever strange to be tempted with the hope that you will fall into evil thinking thus causing conflict, problems, difficulties, heartache, etc. when you live in the devil’s world.

 

Now that we’ve learned about both sources of temptation, let’s find our application to Matt 6:13.

 

Matt 6:13 'And do not lead us into temptation [peirasmo,j; peirasmos], but deliver us from evil.

 

 “Father, I know you do not lead me into testing designed to make me fail, deliver me from this evil by showing me the proper doctrines to apply under the power of Your Spirit.”

 

Ps 119:85 The arrogant have dug pits for me,

Men who are not in accord with Thy law.

 

Ps 119:110 The wicked have laid a snare for me,

Yet I have not gone astray from Thy precepts.

 

He does at times go astray.

Ps 119:176 I have gone astray like a lost sheep; seek Thy servant,

For I do not forget Thy commandments.

 

And all of us have:

ISA 53:6 All of us like sheep have gone astray, Each of us has turned to his own way; But the Lord has caused the iniquity of us all To fall on Him.

 

ISA 53:7 He was oppressed and He was afflicted, Yet He did not open His mouth; Like a lamb that is led to slaughter, And like a sheep that is silent before its shearers, So He did not open His mouth.

 

ISA 53:8 By oppression and judgment He was taken away; And as for His generation, who considered That He was cut off out of the land of the living, For the transgression of my people to whom the stroke was due?

 

ISA 53:9 His grave was assigned with wicked men, Yet He was with a rich man in His death, Because He had done no violence, Nor was there any deceit in His mouth.

 

ISA 53:10 But the Lord was pleased To crush Him, putting Him to grief; If He would render Himself as a guilt offering, He will see His offspring, He will prolong His days, And the good pleasure of the Lord will prosper in His hand.

 

ISA 53:11 As a result of the anguish of His soul, He will see it and be satisfied; By His knowledge the Righteous One, My Servant, will justify the many, As He will bear their iniquities.

 

ISA 53:12 Therefore, I will allot Him a portion with the great, And He will divide the booty with the strong; Because He poured out Himself to death, And was numbered with the transgressors; Yet He Himself bore the sin of many, And interceded for the transgressors.

 

 

Matt 18:12

What do you think? If any man has a hundred sheep, and one of them has gone astray, does he not leave the ninety-nine on the mountains and go and search for the one that is straying?

 

The tempters are all around us:

Ps 10:1 Why dost Thou stand afar off, O Lord? Why dost Thou hide Thyself in times of trouble? [Permissive will; He must allow it - but though it may seem He is far off, He is not]

 

Ps 10:2 In pride the wicked hotly pursue the afflicted; Let them be caught in the plots which they have devised.

 

Ps 10:3 For the wicked boasts of his heart's desire, And the greedy man curses and spurns the Lord.

 

Ps 10:4 The wicked, in the haughtiness of his countenance, does not seek Him. All his thoughts are, "There is no God."

 

Ps 10:5 His ways prosper at all times; Thy judgments are on high, out of his sight; As for all his adversaries, he snorts at them.

 

Ps 10:6 He says to himself, "I shall not be moved; Throughout all generations I shall not be in adversity."

 

Ps 10:7 His mouth is full of curses and deceit and oppression; Under his tongue is mischief and wickedness.

 

Ps 10:8 He sits in the lurking places of the villages; In the hiding places he kills the innocent; His eyes stealthily watch for the unfortunate.

 

Ps 10:9 He lurks in a hiding place as a lion in his lair; He lurks to catch the afflicted; He catches the afflicted when he draws him into his net.

 

Ps 10:10 He crouches, he bows down, And the unfortunate fall by his mighty ones.

 

Ps 10:11 He says to himself, "God has forgotten; He has hidden His face; He will never see it."

 

Ps 10:12 Arise, O Lord; O God, lift up Thy hand. Do not forget the afflicted.

 

Ps 10:13 Why has the wicked spurned God? He has said to himself, "Thou wilt not require it."

 

Ps 10:14 Thou hast seen it, for Thou hast beheld mischief and vexation to take it into Thy hand. The unfortunate commits himself to Thee; Thou hast been the helper of the orphan.

 

Ps 10:15 Break the arm of the wicked and the evildoer [remove his strength, oppose his plans], Seek out his wickedness until Thou dost find none.

 

Ps 10:16 The Lord is King forever and ever; Nations have perished from His land.

 

Ps 10:17 O Lord, Thou hast heard the desire of the humble; Thou wilt strengthen their heart, Thou wilt incline Thine ear

 

Ps 10:18 To vindicate the orphan and the oppressed, That man who is of the earth may cause terror no more.
