Overwhelmed? Focus on the Ransom (Colossians 1:14).

Main idea: Understanding the ransom Christ paid causes in us genuine thanksgiving and motivation to live worthy of Him, maintaining our focus on Him.

 

I. Summary of the prayer that ends in the focus on Christ and His sacrifice:

 

COL 1:3-8

 

Paul is thankful for their faith, love, and hope. He is thankful for the gospel which was what caused them.

 

Paul talks about “the day you heard of it and understood the grace of God in truth.” We will focus on understanding in light of what redemption really is. In the parable of the sower, the soil that bore fruit was the one that “understood.”

 

Understanding

 

It is one thing to hear. The whole world has heard the gospel. It is life saving and changing to understand.

 

COL 1:9-12

 

So the prayer turns from thanks to petition. Paul prays for them to be filled with the knowledge of God’s will so that they will live worthily of the Lord …  

 

Paul’s petition goes right back to thanksgiving, where it began. The genuine thanks in Paul for what the Trinity has done, he prays for them to have as well.

 

Why prayer?

 

Each believer needs continual divine help for all facets of the Christian life.

 

A place to focus: Christ

 

God has given us a spot to focus on - Christ. Paul does just this. As his prayer comes to an end, his focus falls right on Christ.  

 

COL 1:13-14

 

Paul’s focus falls right on the Lord and what He did to make all the above a reality - “through whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.”

 

What does this focus do for our thankfulness and motivation to live out all that Paul has prayed? We have to understand it.

 

The Ransom

 

The one true God is sovereign and He is also love, and He does not act upon our sacrifice, nor did He redeem us with some earthly commodity.

 

1PE 1:17-21

If you address as Father the One who impartially judges according to each one's work, conduct yourselves in fear during the time of your stay on earth;  18 knowing that you were not redeemed [lutroo - to free by paying a ransom] with perishable things like silver or gold from your futile way of life inherited from your forefathers, 19 but with precious blood, as of a lamb unblemished and spotless, the blood of Christ. 20 For He was foreknown before the foundation of the world, but has appeared in these last times for the sake of you 21 who through Him are believers in God, who raised Him from the dead and gave Him glory, so that your faith and hope are in God.

 

All that Paul is thankful for, and all he prays for, falls on the shoulders of the Son of God and the Son of God willfully bears it as He bore the sins of the world on the cross - redemption.

 

The gospel has been heard all over the four corners of the world, yet for the most part, it is not understood.

 

II. Paul and Christ agree on the Ransom

 

Redemption: apolutrosis: release from bondage through the payment of a ransom.

 

A ransom is the price of release. It can come in other forms when the slave owner is something other than sin.  

 

God delivered Israel from Egypt and the ransom was His strength.

 

EXO 6:6

I will also redeem you with an outstretched arm and with great judgments.

 

God delivered Israel again from Babylon and the ransom was again His strength.

 

JER 31:11

For the Lord has ransomed Jacob

And redeemed him from the hand of him who was stronger than he.

 

We were not delivered from a nation but from sin. How God would accomplish this was a mystery until it was revealed.

 

Paul unfolded its meaning which surpassed all human expectations and calculations.

 

GAL 3:13-14

Christ redeemed us from the curse of the Law, having become a curse for us — for it is written, "Cursed is everyone who hangs on a tree" —  14 in order that in Christ Jesus the blessing of Abraham might come to the Gentiles, so that we would receive the promise of the Spirit through faith.

 

1TI 2:5-6

For there is one God, and one mediator also between God and men, the man Christ Jesus, 6 who gave Himself as a ransom for all, the testimony given at the proper time.

 

TIT 2:13-14

our great God and Savior, Christ Jesus, 14 who gave Himself for us to redeem us from every lawless deed, and to purify for Himself a people for His own possession, zealous for good deeds.

 

Paul’s words are clearly linked to the Lord’s.

 

MAR 10:45

"For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many."

 

Context relates us back to the theme of Paul’s prayer:

 

Rich young ruler: what must I do? (MAR 10:17-22)

 

Peter: We left everything to follow you (MAR 10:28) … what then will there be for us? (MAT 19:27)

 

James and John: Can we sit on Your right and left? (MAR 10:35-37).

 

The ten: get mad at James and John (MAR 10:41).

 

And then Jesus speaks seriously to them, as He would to us today:

 

MAR 10:42-45

Calling them to Himself, Jesus said to them, "You know that those who are recognized as rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them; and their great men exercise authority over them.  43 "But it is not this way among you, but whoever wishes to become great among you shall be your servant;  44 and whoever wishes to be first among you shall be slave of all.  45 "For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many."

 

This is the way of the kingdom of Christ.

 

III. Conclusion / Application

 

What He does to give us His life is not different from the life itself.

 

Read 1PE 1:17-21 again. Listen to those words in light of Christ’s here:

 

Paul’s prayer culminates in focusing our eyes on Christ in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.

 

Redemption was the first blow of the hammer that broke our chains of slavery to sin. It was the first thrust of the shovel that broke the ground of a new home. It was the first breath that marked the new birth into a new life.
