Forgiven of All Sin: Redemption and Its Effects (Colossians 1:14).

Intro:
As Paul closes his prayer that centers on the worthy life spent pleasing the Lord, he emphasizes rescue from great evil and relocation into a kingdom beyond dreams.
Reading along we might expect Paul to stop his sentence with the finality of our transference, but we are delighted at another of Paul’s long sentences which runs on into more delight: a fourth aspect which is a distinct celebration of Christ’s love and the unimaginable act it did - redemption.
For He rescued us from the domain of darkness, and transferred us to the kingdom of His beloved Son, 14 in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.
Main idea: Because Christ redeemed you, you are forgiven of all sin and your understanding of this most gracious gift will lead you to love Him, repent from sinfulness to righteousness, and live courageously for Him.
The text.
In whom” - locative: all who are in union with Christ.
He made Him who knew no sin to be sin on our behalf, so that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.
“We have” - present active indicative (echo - to have and to hold): every day of your life you have redemption.
“Redemption” - apolutrosis: release from bondage through the payment of a ransom.
Defined as “the forgiveness of sins.”
I. Sin’s entrance and tyranny: [expansion / application]
Sin entered the world through Adam (doctrine of original sin) and from then sin has tyrannized man until that power was broken by Christ.
The world is burdened by sin.
Sin has caused countless pains, some which remain.
I was formerly a blasphemer and a persecutor and a violent aggressor.
Your flesh will try to convince you that you are not rescued from the DOD. But for this reason that gospel has invaded the world.
Yet I was shown mercy because I acted ignorantly in unbelief; 14 and the grace of our Lord was more than abundant, with the faith and love which are found in Christ Jesus.
II. The solution: Redemption.
Christ invaded the slave market and provided the ransom for any slave by His blood (His life / death on the cross) - redemption is the sin-ward side of the cross.
ROM 5:12 Therefore, just as through one man sin entered into the world, and death through sin, and so death spread to all men, because all sinned —
ROM 5:17-18 For if by the transgression of the one, death reigned through the one, much more those who receive the abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness will reign in life through the One, Jesus Christ. 18 So then as through one transgression there resulted condemnation to all men, even so through one act of righteousness there resulted justification of life to all men.
ROM 8:3-4 For what the Law could not do, weak as it was through the flesh, God did: sending His own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh and as an offering for sin, He condemned sin in the flesh, 4 so that the requirement of the Law might be fulfilled in us, who do not walk according to the flesh but according to the Spirit.
III. Redemption, the forgiveness of sins.
Christ paid the ransom to free you from all of your sins.
just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many."
Called into question by false teachers: COL 2:16 f.
Christ died for all.
Forensic: “Christ made a legal sacrifice for sin the value of which is available for all who believe.” [Chafer, Systematic Theology, vol. III]
No matter how many sins the human race would commit, there was the same sufferings and death on the part of the Savior.
Applies to anyone who believes:
He who did not spare His own Son, but delivered Him over for us all, how will He not also with Him freely give us all things?
Christ Jesus, who gave Himself as a ransom for all
by the grace of God He might taste death for everyone
He Himself is the propitiation for our sins; and not for ours only, but also for those of the whole world.
Commercial: a price or ransom was paid for the slave’s debt.

For you have been bought with a price:
Taken very rigidly as a calculator view or quid pro quo - “this for that” has led to concluding a limited atonement, which logically follows from it.
Cost: His blood
In Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of His grace 8 which He lavished on us
His blood - His life / death (payment of sin is death - ransom)
For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
Substitution (not mercy) huper,
Huper + all, us, the sheep: on our behalf, for us, in our stead.
A beautiful preposition clearly stating that He was bearing that penalty of our sins which we otherwise must ourselves have borne.
OT language fulfilled:
Surely our griefs He Himself bore,
And our sorrows He carried;
Yet we ourselves esteemed Him stricken,
Smitten of God, and afflicted.
5 But He was pierced through for our transgressions,
He was crushed for our iniquities;
The chastening for our well-being fell upon Him,
And by His scourging we are healed.
6 All of us like sheep have gone astray,
Each of us has turned to his own way;
But the Lord has caused the iniquity of us all
To fall on Him.
NT Scripture: HEB 2:9; 1TI 2:6; GAL 3:13; LUK 22:19; 1PE 2:21; 1PE 3:18; 1PE 4:1; ROM 5:8; JOH 10:15. In all these Christ died (huper + all, us, the sheep).
Not physical death, spiritual death.
IV. Forgiveness of sins
Removal of the sin and the penalty.
Free to fight and free to repent and reenter the fight.
Release from guilt and regret
No fear
Boldness to approach God for grace and mercy.
“Having” (present tense) - everyday knowing I am always in need of pardoning mercy.
V. Application / Conclusion
You will consistently be reminded that you “have” redemption with you every day. You are never without the need of pardoning grace and mercy.
Pray daily with His forgiveness in mind.
Redemption remembrance stokes the fire of love for the Lord.
Do not doubt your forgiveness.
Qualified, delivered, transferred (aorists) and now carrying (having - present) redemption with you every day.
Regret over sin, sorrow must all be cast upon the Lord with all prayer (PHI 4:6-7).
