The Question That Answers All Questions: Who Is the Christ?

Class Outline:

Sunday October 19, 2025

Main Idea: Knowing who Jesus is, as He is literally shown in Scripture, will give true wisdom and true peace.

MAT 22:41-46

The scene is the cleansed temple and the cleanser is standing in the large court of the Gentiles teaching.

This leads to confrontation from the leadership. “By whose authority do you do these things.” Meaning - “We’re in charge here. You are no Messiah.”

Jesus responds to their authority challenge with three parables. They did not like that. So they plotted to discredit Him with questions, they thought, He couldn’t answer.

3 questions: their feeble attempts at destroying His credibility. He embarrasses them. But that was not His ultimate goal. He taught them.

Command: Give to God what is God’s - King.

Prophecy: The real resurrection - Prophet.

Interprets the Law: The real responsibility (love) - Priest.

Now He will ask them a question (3+1) - Shalom.

MAT 22:41 - they gather. Same as in questions 1, 3.

MAT 22:42

"What do you think about the Christ, whose son is He?"

He starts off several parables with “what do you think?” He wants us to think and understand.

Jesus’ question is one that the youngest student of the Torah could answer.

MAT 22:42

They said to Him, "The son of David."

MAT 22:42

He said to them, "Then how does David in the Spirit call Him 'Lord,'

“In the Spirit” - the divine inspiration of the Scripture.

Jesus interprets literally.

The church’s greatest tradition is exegesis - literal, grammatical, historical interpretation of holy Scripture.

What is fantastic is who the Messiah truly is.

Jesus does not beat around the prophetic bush. He gets to, what would become the most cited and referenced passage in the Bible (37x).

MAT 22:43-45

He said to them, "Then how does David in the Spirit call Him 'Lord,' saying,

44 'THE LORD SAID TO MY LORD,

"SIT AT MY RIGHT HAND,

UNTIL I PUT YOUR ENEMIES BENEATH YOUR FEET"'?

45 "If David then calls Him 'Lord,' how is He his son?"

None of them doubted Him that David wrote Psa 110. No one doubted that David wrote in the Spirit.

David records a conversation between God and the eventual Messiah. They know Yahweh said to my Adonai who Yahweh then commands to sit at His right hand - the place of power, co-ruling.

David addresses the Messiah King as a superior. This is obvious. The paradox is that He is David’s Son.

Why did they not ask this question in all their thousands of past rabbinical debates and already have it answered thoroughly? They would have mixed it with other questions.

Ex 20:3

“You shall have no other gods before Me.”

ISA 42:7

“I am the Lord, that is My name;

I will not give My glory to another,”

The right hand of God, co-ruling with the Father, could be given to no other than God. But hold on. He is clearly David’s Son.

1CH 17:11-12

I will set up one of your descendants after you, who will be of your sons; and I will establish his kingdom … forever. (see 2SA 7:12-13).

They knew this so well that they easily answered - the Christ, the Messiah is David’s Son. Matthew has been answering this question since chapter 1.

MAT 1:1

The record of the genealogy [geneseos - Genesis] of Jesus the Messiah, the son of David, the son of Abraham:

MAT 1:22-23

Now all this took place to fulfill what was spoken by the Lord through the prophet: 23 "BEHOLD, THE VIRGIN SHALL BE WITH CHILD AND SHALL BEAR A SON, AND THEY SHALL CALL HIS NAME IMMANUEL," which translated means, "GOD WITH US."

MAT 22:45

"If David then calls Him 'Lord,' how is He his son?"

The church has struggled to answer this question because it is so fantastic. But it must be believed as it is stated. Our Lord, our Mediator, is both God and Man.

Hypostatic Union:

In the person of the incarnate Christ are two natures, divine and human, inseparably united without mixture or loss of separate identity, without loss or transfer of properties or attributes, the union being personal and eternal.

This is Him, Son of God, Son of Man, King, Messiah, High Priest, Savior, the Lamb of God, the Last Adam, the Redeemer:

DAN 7:13-14

One like a Son of Man was coming,

And He came up to the Ancient of Days

And was presented before Him.

14 "And to Him was given dominion,

Glory and a kingdom,

He is your Lord if you are a believer. He will be your judge if you are not.

He is Prophet, Priest, and King. He instructs you, heals you, and guides you. You answer this question right and you will find the answers to everything else important.

You won’t find your keys but you will find how to love, glorify God through fruit and thanksgiving.

ROM 1:3-4

concerning His Son, who was born of a descendant of David according to the flesh, 4 who was declared the Son of God with power by the resurrection from the dead, according to the Spirit of holiness, Jesus Christ our Lord,

Liberal interpretations using human reason makes fools.

The church’s greatest tradition is exegesis. However, human reason invaded the church early on and tried to dethrone the literal, grammatical, historical interpretation of Scripture because the conclusions it came to were fantastic.

It turns out that this problem is endemic throughout all humanity in all generations.

Messianic Theories:

Kingly monarch (Pharisees, Zealots, commoners) leading militaristic revolt.

High Priest (Essenes) cleanse the temple.

Moses like who would teach the Law (Pharisees, Essenes).

Dual Messiah (Essenes): King and High Priest.

The early church struggled in the same manner.

God will place all enemies under His feet.

Faith in who He is the answer to every important question.

“until” in PSA 110:1 means that you must be patience while fulfilling great commission.

All plans against Christ will fail.
