The Day the Disciples Forgot Lunch (Mat 16:1-12).

The reason Jesus called that generation evil and adulterous was because they wanted to see a particular kind of sign.
It is evil because after all they saw and heard, they still did not believe in Him.
It is adultery because they sought security in things outside the Lord’s will - amounting to idolatry.
The reason the disciples were rebuked for not remembering it is that all Jesus did and taught were life lessons (MAT 16:9; MAT 16:11).
Leaven represents teaching because false doctrine fills and defiles the heart.
Only after they have calmed from their worry can Jesus teach them.
Main idea: The disciples did not understand nor remember the feeding miracles resulting in their worry over provision, which blinded them to the meaning of Christ’s teaching.
Why is a sign from heaven so bad?
Like the Exodus, after all that they had seen, they are not convinced.
Religious sensationalism wants more than the Lord. It is more-ism.
Congregants want more than the plain Scripture. Christian movements are not satisfied with the death, burial, and resurrection of Christ.
Evil - opposite of good. Bad, harmful, useless. It depicts a soul that is not doing what it should and doing what it shouldn’t.
Adulterous - not staying faithful to one’s spouse. God is the husband of Israel and Christ is the husband of the believer.
Sign of Jonah (MAT 12:38-39) = resurrection (ACT 2:22-36; 4:10-12; 13:29-39; 17:31)
Disciples start to worry about provision after MAT 6:25 f.
Worry shuts down thinking and concentration.
They are so occupied with earthly, literal, material things that they cannot understand the spiritual things. (Martha; PHI 4:6)
The solution to worry or concern over the wrong things is to understand and remember who the Lord is and what He has done.
The temptation is to look at what you have - to count (which was their failure at feeding).
Jesus has shown Himself to be superior to all realistic calculations.
Application:
Do not worry about provision, nor any earthly thing. God provides all of our needs (not our wants).
Don’t assume that you know the truth. Theme of understanding.
Seek the person of the Lord in His word.
