Main Idea: The miracle of Christ walking on water depicts the salvation of the church by grace and then transforming the church to its one destination - the condition of Christ. 

 

Intro: Event in 2 acts. Act 1 - The Lord; Act 2 - Peter (church). 

 

MAT 14:22-33

 

Jesus is God (He does what OT says only God will do; PSA 107:29; JOB 9:8). 

 

If Christ isn’t God then salvation is not complete (COL 2:9-10). 

 

Peter is commanded to do what Christ does. 

 

Foreshadow of the works of the church (JOH 14:12).

 

Faith fails and Jesus delivers

 

They worship the Lord because of who He is - the Son of God. 

 

The sea calms and they go to their destination. 

 

Deliverance: salvation is by grace through faith.

EPH 2:1-10

 

Destination maturity:

 

By faith through grace but now walking or sailing with the Lord, i.e. following Him while you bear your cross (death to the old life and obedience to Him).

 

Journey walking: HEB 10:19-20. 

 

Boat trip: EPH 4:14-16 (put a pin in love). 

 

Unconditional love is the only thing that makes a healthy soul (1JO 4:19). We will not love unless we know we are loved unconditionally.

 

Life / love entered your dark land (JOH 1:4). 

 

What does it look like - getting to our destination?

 

Do all like Christ, as Peter walking on water. JOH 14:6-15

Knowing Him you know the Father - seeing deity.

Church age mystery revealed.

 

It is pretty incredible, after all they had seen, that Philip (and the rest) did not see Christ as the same as the Father.

 

That is earth shattering. “The one who believes in Me, the works I do, he will do also.” - walking on water.

 

Summary: Faith in the Lord Jesus for salvation. Faith that He is the way, truth, and life. He is my salvation and destination. Faith that when I see Him (in His word) I see God. Faith to know that He loves me, God almighty who knows all things, loves me unconditionally. Faith to obey and do what the Lord Jesus did - walk on water. Faith to ask and when I fail in faith (sink), faith to draw near and receive mercy and help.

 

Application: Doing what Christ does - walking on water.

 

Jesus says that if we do not love Him, we will not keep His commandments.

 

But you cannot love Him regardless of all things, unless you know yourself completely and unconditionally loved.

 

Go and do, but know that unconditional love is the fuel, and the Holy Spirit is the only way to it. Trust and obey and know your Savior who is God and Man.
