Some parts of childhood have to go. Other parts of childhood almost every adult loses but which should remain. Jesus is going to tell us today that the Father only reveals wisdom to children.
Main Idea: The child-like learner at the feet of Christ is the only type to gain wisdom.
Fallen man immediately became a skeptic.
Skeptic: person inclined to question or doubt accepted opinions.
Good definition of a skeptic: 2 Tim 3:7
always learning and never able to come to the knowledge of the truth
Highlights:
Two extremes of eating and drinking) rejected (John and Jesus vv. 1-15).
Wisdom produces righteous deeds in every situation (multivariable in life). So wisdom, says Christ, is vindicated. Dikaioo - to deem right, render a verdict.
Lord is thankful in spite of the state of His world. Wisdom sees the hand of God in everything and is grateful.
Wisdom is only gained by infant believers (humble and believing) who learn at the Lord’s feet.
The Lord puts His yoke on His infant learners.
Wisdom is only found in Christianity. Only Christ is life.
To me, the very least of all saints, this grace was given, to preach to the Gentiles the unfathomable riches of Christ, 9 and to bring to light what is the administration of the mystery which for ages has been hidden in God who created all things; 10 so that the manifold [much varied] wisdom of God might now be made known through the church to the rulers and the authorities in the heavenly places.
Life is much varied and so is wisdom.
Example: Are Christians to be sorrowful or happy?
“Truly, truly, I say to you, that you will weep and lament, but the world will rejoice; you will grieve, but your grief will be turned into joy.”
Wisdom does not behave righteously and then dive into a pool of bitterness or anger when the very difficult times come.
The incredible example given is the towns in Galilee who witnessed the greatest number of miracles.
Can believers fall into skepticism? Certainly.
The altar of wisdom must be continually fed by the Word of God.
We must sit at the Savior’s feet every day and learn like children who love and trust their Master.
“You have hidden these things (wisdom) from the wise (sophs) and intelligent (profs).”
They took some virtues all by themselves and did not care to know how they all went together to form the virtuous life.
The deeds of the unwise did not vindicate but condemned them.
A scoffer seeks wisdom and finds none,
But knowledge is easy to one who has understanding.
Jesus is telling us that the skeptic soph and prof will never find wisdom because they never sit long enough at the feet of the Savior and learn by faith.
The children sit at His feet and are delighted with Him. They long for this time.
You cannot live your best life without wisdom constantly learned at the Master’s feet.
Do not be skeptical. There is nothing to fear from our Savior who loves you and gave Himself for you.
Example from Christ: Wisdom told Him it was time to trash the Temple court.
And Jesus entered the temple and drove out all those who were buying and selling in the temple, and overturned the tables of the money changers and the seats of those who were selling doves. 13 And He said to them, "It is written, 'MY HOUSE SHALL BE CALLED A HOUSE OF PRAYER'; but you are making it a ROBBERS' DEN."
14 And the blind and the lame came to Him in the temple, and He healed them. 15 But when the chief priests and the scribes saw the wonderful things that He had done, and the children who were shouting in the temple, "Hosanna to the Son of David," they became indignant 16 and said to Him, "Do You hear what these children are saying?" And Jesus said to them, "Yes; have you never read, 'OUT OF THE MOUTH OF INFANTS AND NURSING BABIES YOU HAVE PREPARED PRAISE FOR YOURSELF'?" 17 And He left them and went out of the city to Bethany, and spent the night there.
The priests know Psa 8. But then again they didn’t know it.
For consider your calling, brethren, that there were not many wise according to the flesh, not many mighty, not many noble…
Application: Being a child learner
Receive the whole realm of Scripture and obey it.
Recognize that seeming contradictions are not; they are the many sides of the multifaceted truth.
Ask the Lord to show you how they go together, having the faith to know that they do.
Patiently keep all of the truth together in your heart and rely on the Holy Spirit to know what applies and when.
Know that this demands obedience. Sinfulness in the heart completely stops the flow of wisdom (grieving, quenching) the Spirit.
Living with skeptics - the gospel and the common grace ministry of the Holy Spirit is the only cure of skepticism. Even miracles didn’t convince them.
