Theme: The baptism of the Holy Spirit was prophesied several times in the OT and always associated with the kingdom of heaven.

MAT 3:11-17

"As for me, I baptize you with water for repentance, but He who is coming after me is mightier than I, and I am not fit to remove His sandals; He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire. 12 "His winnowing fork is in His hand, and He will thoroughly clear His threshing floor; and He will gather His wheat into the barn, but He will burn up the chaff with unquenchable fire."

13 Then Jesus arrived from Galilee at the Jordan coming to John, to be baptized by him. 14 But John tried to prevent Him, saying, "I have need to be baptized by You, and do You come to me?" 15 But Jesus answering said to him, "Permit it at this time; for in this way it is fitting for us to fulfill all righteousness." Then he permitted Him. 16 After being baptized, Jesus came up immediately from the water; and behold, the heavens were opened, and he saw the Spirit of God descending as a dove and lighting on Him, 17 and behold, a voice out of the heavens said, "This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well-pleased."

Baptize in the Holy Spirit.

Always used with the verb - baptize (always an act by God).

The phrase baptize in the Spirit is almost exclusively found in the context of being contrasted with John’s water baptism and the baptism that Jesus brings (MAR 1:8; LUK 3:16; JOH 1:33; ACT 1:5; 11:16).

Water baptism and Spirit baptism are not stages of progression but ritual and reality.

Background of the idea of messianic “baptizing in the Holy Spirit” is found in the OT prophets, who speak of an eschatological outpouring of the Spirit of God.

After the judgment pronouncements to come upon Israel and Judah, a shift to the hope of the future for Israel - covenant love.

ISA 32:1-2

Behold, a king will reign righteously

And princes will rule justly.

2 Each will be like a refuge from the wind

And a shelter from the storm,

Like streams of water in a dry country,

Like the shade of a huge rock in a parched land.

The King is the only relief from:

Wind, storm, drought, scorching sun.

It is meant to strike us as odd. How can a king affect the weather?

PSA 106:9

Thus He rebuked the Red Sea

MAR 4:41

"Who then is this, that even the wind and the sea obey Him?"

In the OT, the gift of the Spirit is associated with the fulfilled kingdom.

By His gift of baptizing you with the Holy Spirit, which cost Him His life and the guilt of all your sin, He made you to be in Him forever - in His kingdom.

ISA 32:3-4

Then the eyes of those who see will not be blinded,

And the ears of those who hear will listen.

4 The mind of the hasty will discern the truth,

And the tongue of the stammerers will hasten to speak clearly.

The section turns to warning the people again and then switches back to the future hope which includes the gift of the Holy Spirit.

ISA 32:15

Until the Spirit is poured out upon us from on high,

And the wilderness becomes a fertile field,

And the fertile field is considered as a forest.

In similar fashion, after warning Israel of judgment, hope is again given, including the gift of the Holy Spirit.

ISA 44:3

'For I will pour out water on the thirsty land

And streams on the dry ground;

I will pour out My Spirit on your offspring

And My blessing on your descendants;

Then a nod to the kingdom …

ISA 44:4-6

And they will spring up among the grass

Like poplars by streams of water.'

5 "This one will say, 'I am the Lord's';

And that one will call on the name of Jacob;

And another will write on his hand, 'Belonging to the Lord,'

And will name Israel's name with honor.

6 "Thus says the Lord, the King of Israel and his Redeemer, the Lord of hosts:

'I am the first and I am the last,

And there is no God besides Me.

We have been blessed with what the OT prophets saw as the ultimate end, or final victory of the Lord for them in the new age.

We are in that blessed place. All believers are baptized with the Holy Spirit.

We begin with the establishing of the kingdom:

EZE 36:23-24

"I will vindicate the holiness of My great name which has been profaned among the nations, which you have profaned in their midst. Then the nations will know that I am the Lord," declares the Lord God, "when I prove Myself holy among you in their sight. 24 "For I will take you from the nations, gather you from all the lands and bring you into your own land.

Then, the baptism of the Spirit…

EZE 36:25-28

"Then I will sprinkle clean water on you, and you will be clean; I will cleanse you from all your filthiness and from all your idols. 26 "Moreover, I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit within you; and I will remove the heart of stone from your flesh and give you a heart of flesh. 27 "I will put My Spirit within you and cause you to walk in My statutes, and you will be careful to observe My ordinances. 28 "You will live in the land that I gave to your forefathers; so you will be My people, and I will be your God.

EZE 39:25-29

Therefore thus says the Lord God, "Now I will restore the fortunes of Jacob and have mercy on the whole house of Israel; and I will be jealous for My holy name. 26 "They will forget their disgrace and all their treachery which they perpetrated against Me, when they live securely on their own land with no one to make them afraid. 27 "When I bring them back from the peoples and gather them from the lands of their enemies, then I shall be sanctified through them in the sight of the many nations. 28 "Then they will know that I am the Lord their God because I made them go into exile among the nations, and then gathered them again to their own land; and I will leave none of them there any longer. 29 "I will not hide My face from them any longer, for I will have poured out My Spirit on the house of Israel," declares the Lord God.

Joel is a book that begins to declare the great and awful day of the Lord. But like Isaiah and Ezekiel and all the prophets, the hope of the future is given.

JOE 2:28-29

"It will come about after this

That I will pour out My Spirit on all mankind;

And your sons and daughters will prophesy,

Your old men will dream dreams,

Your young men will see visions.

29 "Even on the male and female servants

I will pour out My Spirit in those days.

We continue into the next strophe in order to see why Peter is going to quote it.

JOE 2:30-32

"I will display wonders in the sky and on the earth,

Blood, fire and columns of smoke.

31 "The sun will be turned into darkness

And the moon into blood

Before the great and awesome day of the Lord comes.

32 "And it will come about that whoever calls on the name of the Lord

Will be delivered;

For on Mount Zion and in Jerusalem

There will be those who escape,

As the Lord has said,

Even among the survivors whom the Lord calls.

The church would begin to fulfill some of the promises of the new covenant, one of which is the baptism of the Holy Spirit.

ACT 1:4-8

Gathering them together, He commanded them not to leave Jerusalem, but to wait for what the Father had promised, "Which," He said, "you heard of from Me; 5 for John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now."

6 So when they had come together, they were asking Him, saying, "Lord, is it at this time You are restoring the kingdom to Israel?" 7 He said to them, "It is not for you to know times or epochs which the Father has fixed by His own authority;  8 but you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be My witnesses both in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and even to the remotest part of the earth."

Each of us should assess (and want to do so) whether the fruit of the Spirit is manifest in our lives, and if so, to a significant part of our daily lives. All believers are blessed with being made new and dying with Christ and being made alive with Christ by the baptism of the Holy Spirit. You have received power.

The church begins with the baptism of the Holy Spirit.

The church cannot exist apart from Spirit baptism.

ACT 2:14-21

But Peter, taking his stand with the eleven, raised his voice and declared to them: "Men of Judea and all you who live in Jerusalem, let this be known to you and give heed to my words. 15 "For these men are not drunk, as you suppose, for it is only the third hour of the day; 16 but this is what was spoken of through the prophet Joel:

17 'AND IT SHALL BE IN THE LAST DAYS,' God says,

'THAT I WILL POUR FORTH OF MY SPIRIT ON ALL MANKIND;

AND YOUR SONS AND YOUR DAUGHTERS SHALL PROPHESY,

AND YOUR YOUNG MEN SHALL SEE VISIONS,

AND YOUR OLD MEN SHALL DREAM DREAMS;

18 EVEN ON MY BONDSLAVES, BOTH MEN AND WOMEN,

I WILL IN THOSE DAYS POUR FORTH OF MY SPIRIT

And they shall prophesy.

19 'AND I WILL GRANT WONDERS IN THE SKY ABOVE

AND SIGNS ON THE EARTH BELOW,

BLOOD, AND FIRE, AND VAPOR OF SMOKE.

20 'THE SUN WILL BE TURNED INTO DARKNESS

AND THE MOON INTO BLOOD,

BEFORE THE GREAT AND GLORIOUS DAY OF THE LORD SHALL COME.

21 'AND IT SHALL BE THAT EVERYONE WHO CALLS ON THE NAME OF THE LORD WILL BE SAVED.'
