Title: Joshua and Judges: Abrahamic Covenant and its fulfillment in the Millennium, part 7. JER 31:31-34; ISA 54:1-8; HOS 2:13-23.
Announcements / opening prayer:
The fifth-century BC Greek historian Thucydides wrote that “most people will not take pains to get at the truth of things, and are much more inclined to accept the first story they hear.” [Thucydides ]
Stage 6: The Remarriage with restored blessings. A new marriage contract under an unconditional New-covenant.
This event, the second advent of Christ could be quite close as the world seems to be escalating towards a great climax.
In 1860, the French scientist Pierre Berchelt made a startling prediction: “Within a hundred years of physical and chemical science, man will know what the atom is. It is my belief that when science reaches this stage, God will come down with His big ring of keys and will say to humanity: ‘Gentlemen, it’s closing time.’
JER 31:31 "Behold, days are coming," declares the Lord, "when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah,
JER 31:32 not like the covenant which I made with their fathers in the day I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt, My covenant which they broke, although I was a husband to them, "declares the Lord.
JER 31:33 "But this is the covenant which I will make with the house of Israel after those days," declares the Lord, "I will put My law within them, and on their heart I will write it; and I will be their God, and they shall be My people.
JER 31:34 "And they shall not teach again, each man his neighbor and each man his brother, saying, 'Know the Lord,' for they shall all know Me, from the least of them to the greatest of them," declares the Lord, "for I will forgive their iniquity, and their sin I will remember no more."
With this new marriage contract Israel, united as one from Israel and Judah will be restored to the land and the blessing and in this the Abrahamic covenant will be fulfilled.
ISA 54:1 "Shout for joy, O barren one, you who have borne no child; Break forth into joyful shouting and cry aloud, you who have not travailed; For the sons of the desolate one will be more numerous Than the sons of the married woman," says the Lord.
ISA 54:2 "Enlarge the place of your tent;
Stretch out the curtains of your dwellings, spare not;
Lengthen your cords, And strengthen your pegs [for the increase of children].
ISA 54:3 "For you will spread abroad to the right and to the left.
And your descendants will possess nations,
And they will resettle the desolate cities.
Restored Israel will produce legitimate children again.
The barren one is the divorced wife, but she will be restored and she will bear legitimate children again, even more numerous than before the divorce. There is a population boom in the Millennium.
ISA 54:4 "Fear not, for you will not be put to shame;
Neither feel humiliated, for you will not be disgraced;
But you will forget the shame of your youth,
And the reproach of your widowhood you will remember no more.
ISA 54:5 "For your husband is your Maker,
Whose name is the Lord of hosts;
And your Redeemer is the Holy One of Israel,
Who is called the God of all the earth.
ISA 54:6 "For the Lord has called you,
Like a wife forsaken and grieved in spirit,
Even like a wife of one's youth when she is rejected,"
Says your God.
ISA 54:7 "For a brief moment I forsook you,
But with great compassion I will gather you.
ISA 54:8 "In an outburst of anger I hid My face from you for a moment [2600 years and counting]; But with everlasting lovingkindness I will have compassion on you," Says the Lord your Redeemer.
ISA 62:4 It will no longer be said to you, "Forsaken,"
Nor to your land will it any longer be said, "Desolate";
But you will be called, "My delight is in her,"
And your land, "Married";
For the Lord delights in you,
And to Him your land will be married.
ISA 62:5 For as a young man marries a virgin,
So your sons will marry you;
And as the bridegroom rejoices over the bride,
So your God will rejoice over you.
Hosea is a prophet just before the captivity of the northern kingdom. We have already noted 2:13 under the punishment, but then in verse 14 we see the reunion of Israel with her Husband.
HOS 2:13 "And I will punish her for the days of the Baals
When she used to offer sacrifices to them
And adorn herself with her earrings and jewelry,
And follow her lovers, so that she forgot Me," declares the Lord.
HOS 2:14 "Therefore, behold, I will allure her, Bring her into the wilderness, And speak kindly to her.
HOS 2:15 "Then I will give her her vineyards from there, And the valley of Achor [in the Jordan valley near Jericho] as a door of hope. And she will sing there as in the days of her youth As in the day when she came up from the land of Egypt.
HOS 2:16 "And it will come about in that day," declares the Lord, "That you will call Me Ishi And will no longer call Me Baali.
Ishi and Baali are both legitimate names meaning "my husband," but with slightly different emphasis. They can be used interchangeably in the Bible, but Isshi emphasizes the husband as a man while Baali emphasizes the husband as a master. They had allowed the god Baal to be their master, and so that they will never remember this name again, the Hebrew word Baali for husband will never be used again.
Isshi - my husband as "my man."
Baali - my husband as "my master." [too close to the Baal they worshipped so it will no longer be used.]
HOS 2:17 "For I will remove the names of the Baals from her mouth, So that they will be mentioned by their names no more.
HOS 2:18 "In that day I will also make a covenant for them With the beasts of the field, The birds of the sky, And the creeping things of the ground. And I will abolish the bow, the sword, and war from the land, And will make them lie down in safety.
Peace and safety: Israel will never again be invaded or face war.
HOS 2:19 "And I will betroth you to Me forever; Yes, I will betroth you to Me in righteousness and in justice, In lovingkindness and in compassion,
HOS 2:20 And I will betroth you to Me in faithfulness. Then you will know the Lord.
HOS 2:21 "And it will come about in that day that I will respond," declares the Lord."I will respond to the heavens, and they will respond to the earth,
HOS 2:22 And the earth will respond to the grain, to the new wine, and to the oil, And they will respond to Jezreel.
Jezreel - Hebrew: "may God make fertile." It can refer to the scattering of seed or the sowing of seed. Now they are scattered and then they will be sown.
The Valley of Jezreel is Israel's largest valley and because of its fertility, also her most productive. All God had to do was to remove its productivity and the nation experienced a recession or depression. It often failed to produce because God removed His blessings from Israel.
"Therefore the showers have been withheld, And there has been no spring rain.
HOS 2:23 "And I will sow her for Myself in the land. I will also have compassion on her who had not obtained compassion, And I will say to those who were not My people, 'You are My people!'And they will say, 'Thou art my God!'"
EZE 37:21 "And say to them, 'Thus says the Lord God," Behold, I will take the sons of Israel from among the nations where they have gone, and I will gather them from every side and bring them into their own land;
EZE 37:22 and I will make them one nation in the land, on the mountains of Israel; and one king will be king for all of them; and they will no longer be two nations, and they will no longer be divided into two kingdoms.
EZE 37:23 "And they will no longer defile themselves with their idols, or with their detestable things, or with any of their transgressions; but I will deliver them from all their dwelling places in which they have sinned, and will cleanse them. And they will be My people, and I will be their God.
Gentiles who share in the kingdom blessing have unparalleled spiritual and economic benefits, and the thousand-year reign of Christ is a time of joy, peace, and blessing for the entire earth.
Outline of the Millennium, based upon Things to Come by J. Dwight Pentecost.
Dr. Pentecost was professor emeritus at DTS of New Testament Literature and Exegesis. This book, published in 1958, was written with the guidance of Dr. John Walvoord, then president of DTS, and edited by Dr. Charles Ryrie, then professor of Systematic Theology.
Much has been said previously to show that the Millennium age will see the complete fulfillment of all the covenants that God made with Israel. It is sufficient here to show from the Scriptures that the kingdom on earth is viewed as the complete fulfillment of those covenants, and that the millennial age is instituted out of necessity in order to fulfill the covenants.
The Davidic, Palestinian, and New covenant(s) are expansions of the Abrahamic covenant. All are fulfilled in the Millennial age.
The Abrahamic covenant. Israel’s perpetuity, their possession of the land, and their inheritance of blessings are directly related to the fulfillment of this covenant. ISA 10:21-22; 19:25; 43:1; 65:8-9; JER 30:22; 32:38; EZE 34:24, 30-31; MIC 7:19-20; ZEC 13:9; Mat 3: 16-18.
The promises in the Abrahamic covenant concerning the land and the seed are fulfilled in the millennial age.
The Davidic covenant. The promises in the Davidic covenant concerning the king, the throne, and the royal house are fulfilled by Messiah in the millennial age. Isa 11: 1-2; 55:3, 11; JER 23:5-8; 33:20-26; EZE 34:23-25; 37:23-24; HOS 3:5; MIC 4:7-8.
The fact that Israel has a kingdom, over which David’s Son reigns as King, is based on this Davidic covenant.
The Palestinian covenant. The possession of the land. Isa 11: 11-12; 65:9; EZE 16:60-63; 36:28-29; 39:28; HOS 1:10-2:1; MIC 2:12; ZEC 10:6
The promises in the Palestinian covenant concerning the possession of the land are fulfilled by Israel in the millennial age.
The new covenant. The promises of the new covenant of a new heart, the forgiveness of sin, the filling of the Spirit are fulfilled in the converted nation in the millennial age. JER 31:31-34; 32:35-39; EZE 11:18-20; 16:60-63; 37:26; ROM 11:26-29.
All the spiritual blessings Israel receives are fulfillment of this covenant.
It is thus observed that the millennial age finds the complete fulfillment of all that God promised to the nation Israel.
During this age Satan is bound for one thousand years, REV 20:1-3. He has zero influence over the world.
There can be no theocratic kingdom without the personal manifested presence of the Lord Jesus Christ.
"For just as the lightning comes from the east, and flashes even to the west, so shall the coming of the Son of Man be.
The prophetic Scriptures state a number of ministries and manifestations associated with the Messiah at His second advent.
The millennium will be the period of the full manifestation of the glory of the Lord Jesus Christ. There is glory associated with His humanity, dominion, and government.
There will be the manifestation of glory associated with the humanity of Christ. There will be the glory of a glorious dominion, in which Christ, by virtue of his obedience unto death, is given universal dominion to replace that dominion which Adam lost. There will be the glory of a glorious government, in which Christ, as David’s son, is given absolute power to govern.
