61 OT prophecies fulfilled by Christ – Meaning of the name of Christ; John 15:21-22.Title: 61 OT prophecies fulfilled by Christ – Meaning of the name of Christ; John 15:21-22.
John 15:21 "But all these things they will do to you for My name's sake, because they do not know the One who sent Me.
What’s in a name? The first 10 generations:
1 Chron 1:1-4 Adam, Seth, Enosh, 2 Kenan, Mahalalel, Jared, 3 Enoch, Methuselah, Lamech, 4 Noah, Shem, Ham and Japheth.
His name was given to Him by the Father; the angel Gabriel told Mary and Joseph to name Him Jesus, the Father called Him Lord in Psa 110:1; and the Father
Matt 1:21 And she will bear a Son; and you shall call His name Jesus, for it is He who will save His people from their sins.
Jer 23:6 In His days Judah will be saved, And Israel will dwell securely; And this is His name by which He will be called, 'The Lord our righteousness.'
Ps 2:2 The kings of the earth take their stand, And the rulers take counsel together Against the Lord and against His Anointed:
Ps 45:7 Thou hast loved righteousness, and hated wickedness; Therefore God, Thy God, has anointed Thee With the oil of joy above Thy fellows.
The – Unique; Lord – MasterDeity; Jesus – Savior; Christ – Anointed One.
Ps 69:4 Those who hate me without a cause [quoted by Christ in verse 25] are more than the hairs of my head; Those who would destroy me are powerful, being wrongfully my enemies, What I did not steal, I then have to restore.
The HS reminds us that under times of pressure we are experiencing the fellowship of Christ’s suffering, and that it is a privilege to bear reproach for His name.
Phil 3:9-11 and may be found in Him, not having a righteousness of my own derived from the Law, but that which is through faith in Christ, the righteousness which comes from God on the basis of faith, that I may know Him, and the power of His resurrection and the fellowship of His sufferings, being conformed to His death; in order that I may attain to the resurrection from the dead.
If you had asked the religious leaders in Jerusalem if they knew the God they were seeking to defend, they would have said, "Of course we know Him! Israel has known the true God for centuries!" But Jesus said that they did not know the Father and, therefore, they could not know the Son (see John 16:3).
John 15:21 "But all these things they will do to you for My name's sake, because they do not know the One who sent Me.
John 16:1 "These things I have spoken to you, that you may be kept from stumbling.
John 16:2 "They will make you outcasts from the synagogue, but an hour is coming for everyone who kills you to think that he is offering service to God.
John 16:3 "And these things they will do, because they have not known the Father, or Me.
These words will sting Peter when he denies that he knows Him.
John 16:4 "But these things I have spoken to you, that when their hour comes, you may remember that I told you of them. And these things I did not say to you at the beginning, because I was with you.
John 16:5 "But now I am going to Him who sent Me;
The religious leaders knew a great deal about Jehovah Elohim and could quote chapter and verse to defend their doctrines, but they did not personally know God; to them it was nothing more than a culture and a ritual.
This was stated by John in his prologue.
John 1:10 He was in the world, and the world was made through Him, and the world did not know Him.
John 1:11 He came to His own, and those who were His own did not receive Him.
John 1:12 But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, even to those who believe in His name,
John 1:13 who were born not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.
This was not a new theme for our Lord to discuss, because He had mentioned it before to the religious leaders who opposed Him.
John 8:19 And so they were saying to Him, "Where is Your Father?" Jesus answered, "You know neither Me, nor My Father; if you knew Me, you would know My Father also."
John 8:54 Jesus answered, "If I glorify Myself, My glory is nothing; it is My Father who glorifies Me, of whom you say, 'He is our God';
John 8:55 and you have not come to know Him, but I know Him; and if I say that I do not know Him, I shall be a liar like you, but I do know Him, and keep His word.
John 8:56 "Your father Abraham rejoiced to see My day, and he saw it and was glad."
John 8:57 The Jews therefore said to Him, "You are not yet fifty years old, and have You seen Abraham?"
John 8:58 Jesus said to them, "Truly, truly, I say to you, before Abraham was born, I am."
John 8:59 Therefore they picked up stones to throw at Him; but Jesus hid Himself, and went out of the temple.
The religious world today claims to know God, but it does not want to bow the knee to Jesus Christ as the Son of God and the only Saviour of the world. Satan has blinded their minds (2 Cor 4:3-4) and sin has blinded their hearts (Eph 4:17-19).
2 Cor 4:3 And even if our gospel is veiled, it is veiled to those who are perishing,
2 Cor 4:4 in whose case the god of this world has blinded the minds of the unbelieving, that they might not see the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God.
2 Cor 4:5 For we do not preach ourselves but Christ Jesus as Lord, and ourselves as your bond-servants for Jesus' sake.
2 Cor 4:6 For God, who said, "Light shall shine out of darkness," is the One who has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Christ.
Eph 4:17 This I say therefore, and affirm together with the Lord, that you walk no longer just as the Gentiles also walk, in the futility of their mind,
Eph 4:18 being darkened in their understanding, excluded from the life of God, because of the ignorance that is in them, because of the hardness of their heart;
Eph 4:19 and they, having become callous, have given themselves over to sensuality, for the practice of every kind of impurity with greediness.
The contrast to this are those who guard the mystery doctrine as their priority by bowing the knee in humility to Jesus Christ as the Son of God and the only Savior of the world.
Ps 138:2 I will bow down [bend the knee in worship] toward Thy holy temple, And give thanks to Thy name for Thy lovingkindness and Thy truth; For Thou hast magnified Thy word according to all Thy name.
The word and the name are one.
Like Saul of Tarsus, they are so convinced that their "religion" and "righteousness" are satisfactory that in the name of that religion they persecute God's people!
John 15:21 "But all these things they will do to you for My name's sake, because they do not know the One who sent Me.
They do not understand the Father nor the principle by which He operates. The Father operates on the basis of grace. There is no other way for God to take sinful, spiritually dead, hopeless, useless humanity, and make him a child of God. Grace found a way, i.e. the cross. They do not understand grace, “they know not.”
John 15:22 "If I had not come and spoken to them, they would not have sin, but now they have no excuse for their sin.
If Christ had not come then the promises of God to Israel, and in fact the promise to the human race in Gen 3:15, would have all been a lie and so without God and the accountability to His justice there is no sin. If Christ had not come it would be as the Gnostics taught in the first century and in many other forms now that sin is just a matter of interpretation for all matter is evil and all perception is flawed therefore who is to say there is sin in any absolute way, for man is a beast, an animal that is unaccountable to anyone.
But He did come and fulfilled every prophecy concerning Himself, the last of which will be from the cross when He says, “I am thirsty.” All those around the cross would have heard that.
Ps 69:20-21 Reproach has broken my heart, and I am so sick. And I looked for sympathy, but there was none, And for comforters, but I found none. They also gave me gall for my food, And for my thirst they gave me vinegar to drink.

Bible doctrine makes one aware of his sin nature as well as transgressions against God, but the Savior offered eternal life and by rejecting Him they have no excuse, for what else can they find to cloak their sin?
John 15:22 "If I had not come and spoken to them, they would not have sin, but now they have no excuse for their sin.
The fifth reason for the hatred or antagonism of the world is because their sin nature is exposed.
No one likes to be exposed for what they are. Most people walk around wearing masks or façades which they are content to hide behind, when exposed they fight back like a cornered animal.
“excuse” – pro, fasij[prophasis] – combination of “before” and “to say” = to cloak, to make excuse, to speak in defense of an action.
“before you see this or before you say that, let me say something.”
An excuse is a reason not to do something or to believe something or to hide something under a cloak. However, Jesus had come and spoken to them. He fulfilled prophecy, performed miracles, spoke the gospel with authority as only the Lord could do, and he presented Himself to them as the promised anointed one. Therefore, they have no credible defense to speak in support of their unbelief and so their sin remains and is in fact exposed.
John 9:39 And Jesus said, "For judgment I came into this world, that those who do not see may see; and that those who see may become blind."
John 9:40 Those of the Pharisees who were with Him heard these things, and said to Him, "We are not blind too, are we?"
John 9:41 Jesus said to them, "If you were blind, you would have no sin; but since you say, 'We see,' your sin remains.
Religion tries to cloak sin, but doctrine uncloaks it. Religion and man’s sin nature make only a house of cards and doctrine knocks it down with the breadth of truth.
They had to admit that Jesus had healed the man born blind, but they would not follow the evidence to its logical conclusion and put their trust in Him. Jesus told them that they were the ones who were blind! But since they admitted that they had seen a miracle, this made their sin even worse. They were not sinning in ignorance; they were sinning against a flood of light. Why? Because that light revealed their own sin and they did not want to face their sin honestly and they are without cloak or excuse.
But what God knocks down He is ready to lift up through Christ, but if Christ is rejected there is nothing left to lift up anyone. |
