The Last Passover (Matthew 26:17-25).

Sunday February 1, 2026

Mat 26:17-25

Now on the first day of Unleavened Bread the disciples came to Jesus and asked, "Where do You want us to prepare for You to eat the Passover?" 18 And He said, "Go into the city to a certain man, and say to him, 'The Teacher says, "My time is near; I am to keep the Passover at your house with My disciples."'"  19 The disciples did as Jesus had directed them; and they prepared the Passover.

20 Now when evening came, Jesus was reclining at the table with the twelve disciples. 21 As they were eating, He said, "Truly I say to you that one of you will betray Me."  22 Being deeply grieved, they each one began to say to Him, "Surely not I, Lord?" 23 And He answered, "He who dipped his hand with Me in the bowl is the one who will betray Me.  24 "The Son of Man is to go, just as it is written of Him; but woe to that man by whom the Son of Man is betrayed! It would have been good for that man if he had not been born."  25 And Judas, who was betraying Him, said, "Surely it is not I, Rabbi?" Jesus said to him, "You have said it yourself."

The last Passover.

Adore your Lord and live a life of gratitude, for He gave Himself for you and the world that did not know Him nor love Him, but through Him knowledge and love were gifted to all with faith in Him.

“First day of Unleavened Bread”

Passover (14th) and Unleavened Bread (15th - 21st) there was to be no leaven in the house or in a person’s presence.

Exo 12:1-13

Now the Lord said to Moses and Aaron in the land of Egypt, 2 "This month shall be the beginning of months for you; it is to be the first month of the year to you. 3 "Speak to all the congregation of Israel, saying, 'On the tenth of this month they are each one to take a lamb for themselves, according to their fathers' households, a lamb for each household. 4 'Now if the household is too small for a lamb, then he and his neighbor nearest to his house are to take one according to the number of persons in them; according to what each man should eat, you are to divide the lamb. 5 'Your lamb shall be an unblemished male a year old; you may take it from the sheep or from the goats. 6 'You shall keep it until the fourteenth day of the same month, then the whole assembly of the congregation of Israel is to kill it at twilight. 7 'Moreover, they shall take some of the blood and put it on the two doorposts and on the lintel of the houses in which they eat it. 8 'They shall eat the flesh that same night, roasted with fire, and they shall eat it with unleavened bread and bitter herbs. 9 'Do not eat any of it raw or boiled at all with water, but rather roasted with fire, both its head and its legs along with its entrails. 10 'And you shall not leave any of it over until morning, but whatever is left of it until morning, you shall burn with fire. 11 'Now you shall eat it in this manner: with your loins girded, your sandals on your feet, and your staff in your hand; and you shall eat it in haste — it is the Lord's Passover. 12 'For I will go through the land of Egypt on that night, and will strike down all the firstborn in the land of Egypt, both man and beast; and against all the gods of Egypt I will execute judgments — I am the Lord. 13 'The blood shall be a sign for you on the houses where you live; and when I see the blood I will pass over you, and no plague will befall you to destroy you when I strike the land of Egypt.

The Lord is in control of everything.

He knows the location.

He knows how to get the disciples there.

He sends Judas to betray Him when He wants.

He ends the Passover forever and makes a new Supper.

He tells them: keep doing this – He will redeem.

The Lord Jesus transformed the Passover

He linked it to His Person and Work. He transformed it into what the world knows as the Lord’s Supper.

It commemorated:

His death: He was the Lamb of God.

His deliverance: The world would be redeemed from sin.

His kingdom: The union and fellowship flowing from it.

Uniqueness of the Passover:

The Passover is the one feast instituted and observed before the Levitical sacrifices existed. It existed before the Law was given and ratified by blood.

Exo 20:1-3

Then God spoke all these words, saying,

“I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery.

You shall have no other gods before Me.”

Passover belonged neither to one nor to another class of sacrifices; it was neither exactly a sin-offering nor a peace-offering, but combined them both. And yet in many respects it quite differed from them.

So also the priesthood of Christ differed from the OT order of Aaron. He was of the royal order of Melchizedek.

Psa 110:1-4

The Lord says to my Lord:

"Sit at My right hand

Until I make Your enemies a footstool for Your feet."

2 The Lord will stretch forth Your strong scepter from Zion, saying,

"Rule in the midst of Your enemies."

3 Your people will volunteer freely in the day of Your power;

In holy array, from the womb of the dawn,

Your youth are to You as the dew.

4 The Lord has sworn and will not change His mind,

"You are a priest forever

According to the order of Melchizedek."

Passover: Relaxed position of a free person.

Judas: Matthew’s emphasis.

The King loves His betrayer and washes his feet.

The heart of man is hard to change.

“Surely not I Lord?”

His seeming identification is simply that it is one who eats with Him.

Mar 14:20

And He said to them, “It is one of the twelve, one who dips with Me in the bowl.”

He only again identifies the betrayer as one of the 12, but brings the prophecy into the room at that time.

Psa 41:9

Even my close friend in whom I trusted,

Who ate my bread,

Has lifted up his heel against me.

“Close friend in whom I trusted. Who ate my bread.” Judas ate and drank with the Lord Jesus for 3 years, and he did so again on this solemn table. But he would not eat of the bread that Jesus would claim for His own body. He would be sent away before then.

“Surely not I Lord?” – the 11.

“Surely not I Rabbi?” – Judas.
