The God-Man: The Answer to Every Important Question (Matthew 22:41-46).

Wednesday October 22, 2025

Mat 22:41-46.

Intro:

When Job’s suffering reached its peak, the reality of Job’s situation never entered their minds.

When Job finally spoke, he revealed his utter helplessness and despair:

Job 3:3

“Let the day perish on which I was to be born,”

Like Job’s friends who could not see beyond their own estimations, so the Pharisees could not see what the Scripture spoke to them all of their lives. It was too fantastic.

Mat 22:43-45

"Then how does David in the Spirit call Him 'Lord,' saying,

44 'THE LORD SAID TO MY LORD,

"SIT AT MY RIGHT HAND,

UNTIL I PUT YOUR ENEMIES BENEATH YOUR FEET"'?

45 "If David then calls Him 'Lord,' how is He his son?"

Christ’s asks them a question after they ask Him 3. His question is simple. But the implications of the answer in light of Scripture is something very much outside the realm of human reason.

Christ is true humanity and undiminished deity in one person forever.

All humanity is faced with this question.

Christ interprets Psa 110:1 literally according to inspiration of the Holy Spirit, apart from human reason.

Human reason about things that only God knows has been nothing but disaster.

Tit 3:3

For we also once were foolish ourselves [“we” pronoun emphasis], disobedient, deceived, enslaved to various lusts and pleasures, spending our life in malice and envy, hateful, hating one another.

Those without hope in God dream up all kinds of ways to create a utopia on earth, but there is only one way.

Tit 3:4-7

But when the kindness of God our Savior and His love for mankind appeared, 5 He saved us,… He regenerated and washed us and justified us.

Don’t let human reasoning rob you of the fantastic truths contained in the Scripture.

Man resists what is literally stated by God.

The ideas of Messiah in Israel had been reasoned to a level that robbed Him of power.

Messianic Theories:

Kingly monarch (Pharisees, Zealots, commoners) leading militaristic revolt.

High Priest (Essenes) cleanse the temple.

Moses like who would teach the Law (Pharisees, Essenes).

Dual Messiah (Essenes): King and High Priest.

So amazing is the idea of the hypostatic union that the early church needed 500 years of struggle to finally set down a definition.

Council of Chalcedon: “We all with one voice confess our Lord Jesus Christ one and the same Son, at once complete in Godhead and complete in manhood, truly God and truly man … acknowledged in two natures … coming together to form one person.”

The humanity and deity of Christ make Him your Mediator:

When faith releases us from human reason, we are then free in our minds to comprehend the need for a Mediator between sinful fallen us and God.

Job 9:32-33

"For He is not a man as I am that I may answer Him,

That we may go to court together.

33 "There is no umpire between us,

Who may lay his hand upon us both.

Yet we now know that the humanity and deity of Christ can mediate for us, lay a hand on us both.

Since Christ is God and Man, you have the answer to life’s purpose, hope, and fulfillment.

Their first question: Was it lawful to pay taxes to Caesar? He said yes, but to give to God the things that are God’s. Broadly stated - you belong to God. You must give yourself to Him - you owe it to Him.

The answer to question 1: You give your life to God where it has always longed to be.

Fellowship – the ability to walk with God in shared conversation and heart: Jesus is God and Man having His hand upon both you and God (Joh 17:1-5, 11, 21, 22-23).

The second question: a mockery of resurrection.

The answer to question 2: There is a resurrection to a whole new life that is forever united to Jesus. If He is not God, this is not possible. There is real hope in resurrection. No more fear of death. He became like us, truly human, so He could defeat death.

Resurrection hope (1Co 15:20, 22, 26-27, 45)

Last Adam, defeater of death - Jesus is Man.

The third question: What type of commandment is the greatest?

Answer to question 3: love is the foundation of all responsibility to God and mankind.

Responsibility, now in union with our Mediator, is not under the category of duty, but love.

It is now upon you, your privilege to live out your life with solutions through faith, humility, and always thinking of His glory and not your own.

When you fail and sin you are still in Him. He will never forsake you because He was forsaken for you. You confess and return to your Shepherd and find rest for your soul. He is your Husband and your High Priest and Lord.

You are free now to walk in fellowship with Him, giving Him your life.

You are filled with hope now, knowing your resurrection is certain and an excitement fills you when you imagine that death has lost its sting and you will one day be face to face with the Lord and all the rest of the saints in a whole new world.

You are able to fulfill your responsibilities in the best way possible - in love. Not oppressive duty, but love.

There are more questions, but all of them are answered in the miracle who is Jesus Christ our Lord.

They were trying to trap Him, but they unknowingly asked questions that, when answered by Christ, pointed to what Messiah would do for us.

God turns everything into a blessing through Jesus Christ (God is in control) and those who believe in Him and love Him become one of those blessings.
