God Hands Over His Son.Sunday June 22, 2025 Main idea: We understand love only after we have experienced it.
Intro: Jesus did not hide His suffering and death (list Scriptures).
There is little to no understanding of His sacrifice and resurrection until after it is experienced; for them, after it happened historically, for us, after our faith in Him. This is the mystery of common grace, the sovereignty of God, and the free-will of man. Even as witnessers of the gospel, we can only partner with the Holy Spirit’s ministry.
Jesus told them, knowing they would not understand. He told them again and again while knowing their thoughts. (Luk 18:34; Mar 9:32; these are on two different mentions of it).
Joh 13:19 "From now on I am telling you before it comes to pass, so that when it does occur, you may believe that I am He.”
Joh 14:28-29 "You heard that I said to you, 'I go away, and I will come to you.' If you loved Me, you would have rejoiced because I go to the Father, for the Father is greater than I. 29 "Now I have told you before it happens, so that when it happens, you may believe.
In the church, as a believer who has been baptized by the Holy Spirit, you can experience Jesus’ words as you hear them – “the Son of Man is about to be delivered into the hands of men, and they will kill Him and He will be raised on the third day.”
Text: Mat 17:22-23
What the Father willed and what the Son submits to. (passive)
The magnitude and type of love that is displayed by the Father’s desire and the Son’s desire are from heaven.
Paradidomi: define: be delivered over to someone’s hands. Hand over, turn over, give up a person (this was the technical term used by police and courts).
This was prophesied, Isa 53:6, 12.
God used their own evil to thrust into motion the means of their own salvation: identified by their actions: Psa 22:8; Mat 27:38-44.
But what is Jesus’ response? (Luk 23:34)
1Jo 3:16 states that we are to follow this example.
The passive means that Jesus is not actively delivering Himself to them. He says that He lays down His life and no one takes it from Him (Joh 10:18), but this means that He could have prevented it, yet chose not to in order to follow the Father’s will.
The passive means that it was the Father who determined to give up the Son. (Isa 53:10)
Joh 14:31 so that the world may know that I love the Father, I do exactly as the Father commanded Me.
Heb 10:4-10.
Rom 8:32
Applying reason results in heresy; this falsehood spread soon after the church began.
Cerinthianism (Cerinthus): Christ was spirit and Jesus was man and the Christ or logos left Him before the cross (end of 1st century).
Docetism (dokeo - to appear): Christ’s physical body was only an illusion (2nd - 3rd century).
1Jo 3:16
Application: When we see the Trinity delivering up the Son into the hands of men, we will adore Him and we will be changed.
When we see that God moved evil men to put into motion the very events that would supply their salvation, we will adore Him.
You are going to have to lay down your life for some undeserving, unthankful, unbelieving person, without seeing any benefit or reward to yourself, before you will comprehend this aspect of the love of God. And then, you will see the reward to yourself.
Eph 4:1-3 Therefore I, the prisoner of the Lord, implore you to walk in a manner worthy of the calling with which you have been called, 2 with all humility and gentleness, with patience, showing tolerance for one another in love, 3 being diligent to preserve the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace
Eph 5:1-2 Therefore be imitators of God, as beloved children; 2 and walk in love, just as Christ also loved you and gave Himself up for us, an offering and a sacrifice to God as a fragrant aroma.
Eph 5:21 be subject to one another in the fear of Christ.
We have to learn to adore Christ for His doing this very thing (Psa 150:2). Still, you can wait so long that it never happens.
Main idea: We understand love only after we have experienced it.
And, if you set yourself to be a doer of the Word, do you think Satan is going to sit idly by?
Eph 6:10-12 Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of His might. 11 Put on the full armor of God, so that you will be able to stand firm against the schemes of the devil. 12 For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the powers, against the world forces of this darkness, against the spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenly places.
What tactics will he use to stop you? To stop you from doing what love demands so that you will truly see its reward? By the will of the Father, applying the passive paradidomai to your own life?
