Mat 10:24-42; The Lord’s Manor and His Slaves.Sunday January 12, 2025
Intro: Jefferson quote: “the mass of mankind has not been born with saddles on their backs, nor a favored few booted and spurred, ready to ride them legitimately, by the grace of God.”
Mat 10:24-25 “A disciple is not above his teacher, nor a slave above his master. 25 It is enough for the disciple that he become like his teacher, and the slave like his master.”
Notice the word “like” used in both references. What lord would want his students and servants to be like him?
God said way back that no one is like Him. Exo 9:14 there is no one like Me in all the earth.
But then the Son of God becomes like one of us:
Phi 2:7 but emptied Himself, taking the form of a bond-servant, and being made in the likeness of men.
But not to stand aloof from us, but in fact, to make us like Himself in every manner of noble, virtuous, joyful life.
Eph 4:13 until we all attain to the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to a mature man, to the measure of the stature which belongs to the fullness of Christ.
Rom 8:29 He also predestined to become conformed to the image of His Son, so that He would be the firstborn among many brethren;
He will even transform our physical bodies to be like His. (what lord could do that?)
Phi 3:21 who will transform the body of our humble state into conformity with the body of His glory…
There is a cost to being like Him in this world:
Mat 10:25 “If they have called the head of the house Beelzebul, how much more will they malign the members of his household!”
This is why this part of the sermon is in His Sermon on Mission. It is easier to stay quiet, but if you are going to boldly tell others what the Lord told you while you live and act like Him, you will be persecuted, called names, ridiculed, mocked; and you are to respond with ______.
Main Idea: The greatness of your Master transforms you into His great servant.
He is your Teacher and your Lord. You are in His school and manor as student and slave.
Because He is hated, so will His servants be.
Because our Lord Jesus is so different than all others, His name is hated. As you fearlessly speak what He told you and boldly live as He is, they will also hate you.
Where we are going this week:
Mat 10:26-31 “Therefore do not fear them, for there is nothing concealed that will not be revealed, or hidden that will not be known. 27 What I tell you in the darkness, speak in the light; and what you hear whispered in your ear, proclaim upon the housetops. 28 Do not fear those who kill the body but are unable to kill the soul; but rather fear Him who is able to destroy both soul and body in hell [far superior power]. 29 Are not two sparrows sold for a cent? And yet not one of them will fall to the ground apart from your Father [Psa 104 – the Lord loves animals]. 30 But the very hairs of your head are all numbered [how intimately the Master knows you; not many lords would know their servants this way]. 31 So do not fear; you are more valuable than many sparrows.” (Mat 6:25-26)
Do not fear antagonists. You will be vindicated (judgment seat).
Be bold outside. Fear the Lord.
Fear the Master who loves you. If you don’t fear Him, you will fear everything else.
You are valuable to Him.
He will be proud of you. He is going to reward you.
Mat 10:32-33 “Therefore everyone who confesses Me before men, I will also confess him before My Father who is in heaven. 33 But whoever denies Me before men, I will also deny him before My Father who is in heaven.”
For today, the first principle is the most important. Main Idea: The greatness of your Master transforms you into His great servant.
If we don’t see His greatness and the joy of being like Him, then how we tackle the rest of this sermon will only be procedure and not the fruits of divine life.
Application: Know the Lord.
Know that the Lord has set you in His house and is training you to be like Him.
Know Him and His plans for you and you will not hide anything He said nor fear those who threaten you.
Let’s use two passages to bring us home:
Heb 2:5-8 For He did not subject to angels the world to come, concerning which we are speaking. 6 But one has testified somewhere, saying,
"WHAT IS MAN, THAT YOU REMEMBER HIM? [Psa 8 – When I consider the heavens, the work of Your hands…] OR THE SON OF MAN, THAT YOU ARE CONCERNED ABOUT HIM? 7 "YOU HAVE MADE HIM FOR A LITTLE WHILE LOWER THAN THE ANGELS; YOU HAVE CROWNED HIM WITH GLORY AND HONOR, AND HAVE APPOINTED HIM OVER THE WORKS OF YOUR HANDS; 8 YOU HAVE PUT ALL THINGS IN SUBJECTION UNDER HIS FEET."
For in subjecting all things to him, He left nothing that is not subject to him. But now we do not yet see all things subjected to him.
Heb 2:9-18 But we do see Him who was made for a little while lower than the angels, namely, Jesus, because of the suffering of death crowned with glory and honor, so that by the grace of God He might taste death for everyone.
10 For it was fitting for Him, for whom are all things, and through whom are all things, in bringing many sons to glory [slaves in His house], to perfect the author of their salvation through sufferings [brings them upstairs]. 11 For both He who sanctifies and those who are sanctified are all from one Father; for which reason He is not ashamed to call them brethren [to be like Him], 12 saying,
"I WILL PROCLAIM YOUR NAME TO MY BRETHREN, IN THE MIDST OF THE CONGREGATION I WILL SING YOUR PRAISE."
13 And again,
"I WILL PUT MY TRUST IN HIM."
And again,
"BEHOLD, I AND THE CHILDREN WHOM GOD HAS GIVEN ME."
14 Therefore, since the children share in flesh and blood, He Himself likewise also partook of the same, that through death He might render powerless him who had the power of death, that is, the devil, 15 and might free those who through fear of death were subject to slavery all their lives. 16 For assuredly He does not give help to angels, but He gives help to the descendant of Abraham. 17 Therefore, He had to be made like His brethren in all things, so that He might become a merciful and faithful high priest in things pertaining to God, to make propitiation for the sins of the people. 18 For since He Himself was tempted in that which He has suffered, He is able to come to the aid of those who are tempted.
Joh 13:12-20 So when He had washed their feet, and taken His garments and reclined at the table again, He said to them, "Do you know what I have done to you? 13 "You call Me Teacher and Lord [same terms in Mat 10:24]; and you are right, for so I am. 14 "If I then, the Lord and the Teacher, washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another's feet [Like Him as a servant]. 15 "For I gave you an example that you also should do as I did to you. 16 "Truly, truly, I say to you, a slave is not greater than his master, nor is one who is sent greater than the one who sent him. 17 "If you know these things, you are blessed if you do them. 18 "I do not speak of all of you. I know the ones I have chosen; but it is that the Scripture may be fulfilled, 'HE WHO EATS MY BREAD HAS LIFTED UP HIS HEEL AGAINST ME.' 19 "From now on I am telling you before it comes to pass, so that when it does occur, you may believe that I am He. 20 "Truly, truly, I say to you, he who receives whomever I send receives Me; and he who receives Me receives Him who sent Me."
Mat 11:28-30 "Come to Me, all who are weary and heavy-laden, and I will give you rest. 29 "Take My yoke upon you, and learn from Me, for I am gentle and humble in heart; and you shall find rest for your souls. 30 "For My yoke is easy, and My load is light."
