Names of God: YHVH, part 9. The unfathomable riches of Yavah given to the church; Heb 10:1-25; Rom 3:21-26.Title: Names of God: YHVH, part 9. The unfathomable riches of Yavah given to the church; Heb 10:1-25; Rom 3:21-26.
Heb 10:19 Since therefore, brethren, we have confidence to enter the holy place by the blood of Jesus,
Heb 10:20 by a new and living way [hodos: road] which He inaugurated for us through the veil, that is, His flesh,
Heb 10:21 and since we have a great priest over the house of God,
Heb 10:22 let us draw near with a sincere heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled clean from an evil conscience and our bodies washed with pure water.
The church age believer is completely clean and should therefore have a conscience that is filled with God's good. He is clean through faith in Christ and can draw near to God, not in the way of the high priest of Israel in the OT through ritual, but with assurance of faith.
Heb 10:23 Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering [leaning back or leaning away], for He who promised is faithful;
The fleshly pull against these Jews was the Temple and the law, yet there is a pull towards something in every believer. We usually call it our weakness, but it can come in many forms and ways. We must keep worshipping God in our everyday lives so that we can always recognize it.
“Let us hold fast” – kate,cw[katecho] = to hold down, to hold firmly.
The Jews are encouraged that the Lord who promised them complete cleansing and forgiveness and the presence of His face is faithful to fulfill it.
This gets right to the point that everyone has some things in their lives that temp them to doubt that it is quite true that we have been given the privilege and honor to behold the face of God every moment and that we are in fact perfectly cleansed and forgiven through the blood of Christ.
There persists in this world and simultaneously in our flesh, the doubt that walking with, conversing with, communing with the transcendent God is possible.
There are the proud self-righteous types who believe they walk with God because of their own work and that they earn fellowship. There are those in the unbelieving world who think God does not love them or offer them grace. There are the believers who are deceived into thinking that it is not possible, or that it is by ritual or works. And, there are the believers who strive to walk in God's plan and who understand that they still sin and sometimes walk in weakness. The believers who strive to know and follow God understand just how transcendent God really is, and in light of their own shortcomings, they may doubt that deep, personal communion with God is possible on a consistent basis.
Not only is communion with God possible, but also to do His work and bear His fruit.
Joh 14:11 "Believe Me that I am in the Father, and the Father in Me; otherwise believe on account of the works themselves.
Joh 14:12 "Truly, truly, I say to you, he who believes in Me, the works that I do shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he do; because I go to the Father.
The works He speaks of are miracles and those who are in the room with Him will do them. But, greater works will they do and we do when He goes to the Father – we will behold Him and bear His fruit.
It’s not that we do greater works than Him. He bore all the fruit that we will bear. He is saying that we will do more than miracles.
Immediately after this, He explains why this will be possible for us.
Joh 14:13 "And whatever you ask in My name, that will I do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son.
Joh 14:14 "If you ask Me anything in My name, I will do it.
The “anything” refers to the “greater works.” He is saying that He will always be at the right hand of the Father to assist you in the work as you behold His face. He will never leave you.
Joh 14:15 "If you love Me, you will keep My commandments.
You must behold Him to love Him and when you do you will see that the commandments are a beautiful and compelling as He is and you will keep them, not sinlessly, but hungering to keep them.
Beholding Him is only possible through the ministry of the filling of the Holy Spirit. “The mind set on the Spirit is life and peace.” (Rom 8:6)
Joh 14:16 "And I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may be with you forever;
Joh 14:17 that is the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it does not behold Him or know Him, but you know Him because He abides with you, and will be in you.
Joh 14:18 "I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you.
Joh 14:19 "After a little while the world will behold Me no more; but you will behold Me; because I live, you shall live also.
Joh 14:20 "In that day you shall know that I am in My Father, and you in Me, and I in you.
