Class Outline:

Title: Gospel of John [JOH 16:8]. The advantage of the HS. MAT 28:18-20; HEB 10:4-7; EPH 4:1-6.

JOHN-834-140724

We are going to begin the doctrine of God the Holy Spirit. The first thing Christ mentions is His ministry to the world.

JOH 16:8 "And He, when He comes, will convict the world concerning sin, and righteousness, and judgment;

JOH 16:9 concerning sin, because they do not believe in Me;

JOH 16:10 and concerning righteousness, because I go to the Father, and you no longer behold Me;

JOH 16:11 and concerning judgment, because the ruler of this world has been judged.

Then our Lord speaks of the ministry of God the Holy Spirit to the believer.

JOH 16:12 "I have many more things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now.

JOH 16:13 "But when He, the Spirit of truth, comes, He will guide you into all the truth; for He will not speak on His own initiative, but whatever He hears, He will speak; and He will disclose to you what is to come.

JOH 16:14 "He shall glorify Me; for He shall take of Mine, and shall disclose it to you.

JOH 16:15 "All things that the Father has are Mine; therefore I said, that He takes of Mine, and will disclose it to you.

/The Doctrine of God the Holy Spirit. \

The Spirit is often neglected in the area of systematic theology. It's as if He is not as important as the Father and Son, yet He is fully God, a person of the Trinity in no particular order, and co-equal and co-eternal with God the Father and God the Son.

/There is a great failure in many seminaries, denominations, and local churches to make the Spirit an object of faith as the Father and Son - faith for understanding, leading, and empowering.\

It is not said in Scripture that salvation is based upon faith in the Holy Spirit as it is in faith in the Son and faith in the Father to send the Son, yet in order to understand the deep truths of the Father and Son there must be a complete dependence upon the teaching ministry of G/HS. In order to put doctrines understood into practice there is a complete dependence upon G/HS for leading, guiding, and empowering. Yet many have partitioned the HS off into emotional ecstatics and rituals.

/1. The Holy Spirit is deity and a person.

                        a. He bears the names of deity.

                        b. He exhibits the attributes of deity.

                        c. He accomplishes the works of deity. \

Man did not invent God's titles. God has revealed His own titles. No man or angel has ever been called upon to select names for God. His names are a fulfillment of infinity and have been only but partially understood by mankind and angels. Unfallen Adam was called upon to name animals, but never God, how much more for fallen mankind?

The names of God are many, however we will focus on God the Holy Spirit.

MAT 28:18 And Jesus came up and spoke to them, saying, "All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth.

MAT 28:19 "Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit,

MAT 28:20 teaching them to observe all that I commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age."

The relation of Father and Son has no parallel in human relationships. The order does not indicate superiority or inferiority.

/"name" is singular and each name [title] is separated by the conjunction kai.\

This is an authoritative mandate to make His name known throughout the world. So then, to deny these names is to deny the authority of Christ.

Against this has come the many false camps who deny the doctrine of the Trinity or deny the doctrine of unity amongst Them and turning it into polytheism.

Though our subject is not the doctrine of the Trinity, with the complete revelation of Scripture, we can confidently say that they are three distinct persons but one in being and in essence.

/The Spirit is sent forth from both the Father and the Son. \

JOH 15:26 "When the Helper comes, whom I will send to you from the Father, that is the Spirit of truth, who proceeds from the Father, He will bear witness of Me,

JOH 15:27 and you will bear witness also, because you have been with Me from the beginning.

/The Spirit reveals the Son who is the manifestation of the Father, Joh1:18.\

He is not a force or presence of the Father or Son but is rather sent out from both the Father and Son.

/The Son comes into the world to do the Father's will, HEB 10:4-7.\

HEB 10:4 For it is impossible for the blood of bulls and goats to take away sins.

HEB 10:5 Therefore, when He comes into the world, He says,

"Sacrifice and offering Thou hast not desired,

But a body Thou hast prepared for Me;

HEB 10:6 In whole burnt offerings and sacrifices for sin Thou hast taken no pleasure.

HEB 10:7 "Then I said, 'Behold, I have come

 (In the roll of the book it is written of Me)

To do Thy will, O God.'"

/The Spirit is subject to both the Father and the Son, yet the Son made Himself subject to the Spirit.

LUK 4:1-2

And Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan and was led about by the Spirit in the wilderness for forty days, being tempted by the devil.\

Thus the human notion that the greater must be served by the less is wholly foreign to the divine interrelationships.

LUK 22:24 And there arose also a dispute among them as to which one of them was regarded to be greatest.

LUK 22:25 And He said to them, "The kings of the Gentiles lord it over them; and those who have authority over them are called 'Benefactors.'

LUK 22:26 "But not so with you, but let him who is the greatest among you become as the youngest, and the leader as the servant.

LUK 22:27 "For who is greater, the one who reclines at the table, or the one who serves? Is it not the one who reclines at the table? But I am among you as the one who serves.

/Names: The Spirit; Holy Spirit (distinguish from other spirits); The Spirit of God (belongs to Godhead); Spirit of Christ (sent by Christ)\

He is not given a formal name as the Lord Jesus Christ, but is rather given descriptive titles, of which the most common in Scripture and din ordinary usage is The Holy Spirit.

/In the OT, ruach is used over one hundred times for the HS and His references are scattered throughout.\

/In the NT His references are more numerous. The NASB has 236 references of "Spirit;" by far most are in Paul's epistles.\

He is first mentioned in GEN 1:2 and last mentioned in REV 22:17 and in between there is a constant reference to Him and therefore it is plain that a constant ministry of the HS is maintained suitable for each dispensation.

Of the many titles and variations in reference to the HS, sixteen reveal His relationship to the other Persons of the Trinity. Eleven titles are found relating Him to the Father.

/11 titles relating Him to the Father:

(1) Spirit of God (GEN 1:2; MAT 3:16); (2) Spirit of the Lord (LUK 4:18); (3) Spirit of Our God (1CO 6:11); (4) His Spirit (NUM 11:29); (5) Spirit of Jehovah (JUD 3:10); (6) Thy Spirit (PSA 139:7); (7) Spirit of the Lord God (ISA 61:1); (8) Spirit of your Father (MAT 10:20); (9) Spirit of the living God (2CO 3:3); (10) My Spirit (GEN 6:3); (11) Spirit of Him (ROM 8:11).\

/Five titles are found relating Him to the Son.

(1) Spirit of Christ (ROM 8:9; 1PE 1:11);  (2) Spirit of Jesus Christ (Php 1:19); (3) Spirit of Jesus (ACT 16:7); (4) Spirit of His Son (GAL 4:6); (5) Spirit of the Lord (ACT 5:9; 8:39).\

While there is some distinction in meaning in the various titles, the chief significance is to bring out the relationship of the HS as the Third Person of the Trinity, all affirming His deity and relationship.

/Holy Spirit attributes. \

Abundant revelation is given in the titles of the Holy Spirit to disclose His attributes.

/The unity of the Spirit is revealed in the title, One Spirit  (EPH 4:4). \

EPH 4:1 I, therefore, the prisoner of the Lord, entreat you to walk in a manner worthy of the calling with which you have been called,

EPH 4:2 with all humility and gentleness, with patience, showing forbearance to one another in love,

EPH 4:3 being diligent to preserve the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.

EPH 4:4 There is one body and one Spirit, just as also you were called in one hope of your calling;

EPH 4:5 one Lord, one faith, one baptism,

EPH 4:6 one God and Father of all who is over all and through all and in all.

/The identity of the Holy Spirit and the Essence of the Trinity is affirmed in the title, the Lord the Spirit (2CO 3:18). \

2CO 3:17 Now the Lord is the Spirit; and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty.

2CO 3:18 But we all, with unveiled face beholding as in a mirror the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from glory to glory, just as from the Lord, the Spirit.

/The eternity of the Spirit is seen in the title, Eternal Spirit (HEB 9:14). \

HEB 9:11 But when Christ appeared as a high priest of the good things to come, He entered through the greater and more perfect tabernacle, not made with hands, that is to say, not of this creation;

HEB 9:12 and not through the blood of goats and calves, but through His own blood, He entered the holy place once for all, having obtained eternal redemption.

HEB 9:13 For if the blood of goats and bulls and the ashes of a heifer sprinkling those who have been defiled, sanctify for the cleansing of the flesh,

HEB 9:14 how much more will the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered Himself without blemish to God, cleanse your conscience from dead works to serve the living God?

HEB 9:15 And for this reason He is the mediator of a new covenant, in order that since a death has taken place for the redemption of the transgressions that were committed under the first covenant, those who have been called may receive the promise of the eternal inheritance.
