And do not get drunk [present passive imperative] with wine, for that is dissipation, but be filled [present passive imperative] with the Spirit,
More of this will be developed when we get back to John 16.
But when He, the Spirit of truth, comes, He will guide you into all the truth; for He will not speak on His own initiative, but whatever He hears, He will speak; and He will disclose to you what is to come.
A believer that is not positive to the truth will not think with God or walk with God, rather he will think in opposition to God. Opposition to God cannot coexist with the full influence of God the Holy Spirit. Therefore, to be fully influenced by the Spirit one must have positive volition towards the plan of God and the commands of God. When he is tempted his positive volition resists with the assistance of the Trinity.
then the Lord [Jesus Christ] knows how to rescue the godly from temptation, and to keep the unrighteous under punishment for the day of judgment,
No temptation has overtaken you but such as is common to man; and God [the Father] is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will provide the way of escape also, that you may be able to endure it.
For the flesh sets its desire against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh; for these are in opposition to one another, so that you may not do the things that you please.
God the HS influences you with His strong desire if you are a positive believer, but He cannot coerce your free will. We decide what to do with that desire.
Jesus Christ [executor] - rescue; Father [planner] - will not allow too much temptation; HS [revealer] - reveals God’s desire.
So we see them working on your behalf or influencing you in temptation, but we don’t see that when we acquiesce to the sin, for in that state of thinking we are walking in darkness, and there is only one thing to do, recover! Therefore, recovery is a function of our volition as we return to fellowship and walk in the light. As walking in the light, let the influencing of all three members of the Trinity, who indwell us, begin again, without guilt or condemnation.
Satan has worked tirelessly to distort their roles, their truths, and their gracious solutions.
When the believer finds himself walking in darkness, his positive volition demands that he recover quickly.
If I’m negative towards the truth, then why would I even want to recover?
EPH 5:19 speaking to one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody with your heart to the Lord;
EPH 5:20 always giving thanks for all things in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to God, even the Father;
EPH 5:21 and be subject to one another in the fear of Christ.
EPH 5:22 Wives, be subject [passive participle] to your own husbands, as to the Lord.
EPH 5:23 For the husband is the head of the wife, as Christ also is the head of the church, He Himself being the Savior of the body.
EPH 5:24 But as the church is subject to Christ, so also the wives ought to be to their husbands in everything.
Husbands, love [PAI] your wives, just as Christ also loved the church and gave Himself up for her;
EPH 5:26 that He might sanctify her, having cleansed her by the washing of water with the word,
EPH 5:27 that He might present to Himself the church in all her glory, having no spot or wrinkle or any such thing; but that she should be holy and blameless.
EPH 5:28 So husbands ought also to love their own wives as their own bodies. He who loves his own wife loves himself;
EPH 5:29 for no one ever hated his own flesh, but nourishes and cherishes it, just as Christ also does the church,
EPH 5:30 because we are members of His body.
EPH 5:31 For this cause a man shall leave his father and mother, and shall cleave to his wife; and the two shall become one flesh.
EPH 5:32 This mystery is great; but I am speaking with reference to Christ and the church.
Nevertheless let each individual among you also love [PAI] his own wife even as himself; and let the wife see to it that she respect [present passive subjunctive] her husband.
Children, obey [PAI] your parents in the Lord, for this is right.
Honor [PAI] your father and mother (which is the first commandment with a promise),
EPH 6:3 that it may be well with you, and that you may live long on the earth.
And, fathers, do not provoke [PAI] your children to anger; but bring them up [PAI] in the discipline and instruction of the Lord.
Slaves, be obedient [PAI] to those who are your masters according to the flesh, with fear and trembling, in the sincerity of your heart, as to Christ;
EPH 6:6 not by way of eyeservice, as men-pleasers, but as slaves of Christ, doing the will of God from the heart.
EPH 6:7 With good will render service, as to the Lord, and not to men,
EPH 6:8 knowing that whatever good thing each one does, this he will receive back from the Lord, whether slave or free.
And, masters, do [PAI] the same things to them, and give up threatening, knowing that both their Master and yours is in heaven, and there is no partiality with Him.
Finally, be strong [PPI] in the Lord, and in the strength of His might.
Put on [AMI] the full armor of God, that you may be able to stand firm against the schemes of the devil.
Taking up the armor is active in verse 13 while putting it on is middle, meaning that the believer participates in the result which is strength and protection in the midst of intense spiritual warfare.
EPH 6:12 For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the powers, against the world forces of this darkness, against the spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenly places.
Therefore, take up [AAI] the full armor of God, that you may be able to resist in the evil day, and having done everything, to stand firm.
Stand firm [AAI] therefore, having girded your loins with truth, and having put on the breastplate of righteousness,
EPH 6:15 and having shod [aorist middle participle] your feet with the preparation of the gospel of peace;
EPH 6:16 in addition to all, taking up [aorist active participle] the shield of faith with which you will be able to extinguish all the flaming missiles of the evil one.
And take [AMI] the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.
Middle - the believer participates in the results of being fully rooted in the wisdom concerning his salvation, for it is the very foundation of all doctrines. Described as the helmet here, it protects from fatal strikes to the soul by the KOD in their attempts to get him to doubt, to fear, to get guilty or condemned, but the helmet of salvation deflects these blows of falsehood easily. The sword of the Spirit is the Spirits fully influencing work in the life of the believer who loves the word of God above all else. This is the only offensive weapon and the positive believer wields it with the utmost skill, striking his enemy precisely and without waste of energy and without exposing himself to counterattack.
EPH 6:18 With all prayer and petition pray at all times in the Spirit, and with this in view, be on the alert with all perseverance and petition for all the saints,
EPH 6:19 and pray on my behalf, that utterance may be given to me in the opening of my mouth, to make known with boldness the mystery of the gospel,
EPH 6:20 for which I am an ambassador in chains; that in proclaiming it I may speak boldly, as I ought to speak.
EPH 6:21 But that you also may know about my circumstances, how I am doing, Tychicus, the beloved brother and faithful minister in the Lord, will make everything known to you.
EPH 6:22 And I have sent him to you for this very purpose, so that you may know about us, and that he may comfort your hearts.
EPH 6:23 Peace be to the brethren, and love with faith, from God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.
EPH 6:24 Grace be with all those who love our Lord Jesus Christ with a love incorruptible.
If the Christian way of life was just let go and let God then there would be no active imperatives. There are active and passive and middle imperatives and there are enough active ones to keep me occupied for the rest of my life yet the middles and the passives also require volition, so don’t be deceived, God is not mocked, whatever a man sows he will also reap.
Summary:
Active commands - you choose to perform:
Remember deliverance, speak truth, don’t dwell on legitimate anger at falsehood, don’t give opportunity to devil, don’t rob God, labor, don’t grieve HS, walk in love, know fate of unbeliever, don’t be deceived, walk as children of light, don’t fellowship with darkness, awake from sleep, arise from darkness, be careful how you walk, understand the will of the Lord, husbands love your wives, children obey and honor parents, fathers don’t provoke children and bring them up in the will of the Lord, slaves obey masters, masters do good to slaves, take up the full armor of God, stand firm against KOD. (25)
Passive commands - commanded to receive the action:
Anger at falsehood, put away MAS’s, naming sins of others, be not drunk, be filled with the Spirit, be strong in the Lord. (6) [ROM 12:2] don’t be conformed to the world, be transformed by truth.
Middle commands - commands to participate in the results.
No unwholesome word proceed from your mouth, be kind to one another, be imitators of God, do not become partners with unbelievers, put on the full armor of God, take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit (which is the word of God). (6)
JOH 14:15 "If you love Me, you will keep My commandments.
JOH 14:16 "And I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may be with you forever;
JOH 14:17 that is the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it does not behold Him or know Him, but you know Him because He abides with you, and will be in you.
God gave each person a free will. It is for this reason that we can be witnesses for Him. If we were coerced then we are false witnesses.
The believer must be active in the Christian way of life, and then leave the passives to God, while knowing that they are commands.
Let go and let God is not a Christian principle, it is a lie. The believer must actively pursue the spiritual life, but always in grace. It is volition, choice, and decisions for the things of God.
for we walk by faith, not by sight

1SA 17:8 Am I not the Philistine and you servants of Saul? Choose a man for yourselves and let him come down to me.
No man can be chosen to be God’s hero by another man. Every believer must chose this for himself!
1SA 17:9 If he is able to fight with me and kill me, then we will become your servants; but if I prevail against him and kill him, then you shall become our servants and serve us."
1SA 17:10 Again the Philistine said, "I defy the ranks of Israel this day; give me a man that we may fight together."
1SA 17:11 When Saul and all Israel heard these words of the Philistine, they were dismayed and greatly afraid.
1SA 17:12 Now David was the son of the Ephrathite of Bethlehem in Judah, whose name was Jesse, and he had eight sons. And Jesse was old in the days of Saul, advanced in years among men.
1SA 17:13 And the three older sons of Jesse had gone after Saul to the battle. And the names of his three sons who went to the battle were Eliab the first-born, and the second to him Abinadab, and the third Shammah.
1SA 17:14 And David was the youngest. Now the three oldest followed Saul,
1SA 17:15 but David went back and forth from Saul to tend his father's flock at Bethlehem.
1SA 17:16 And the Philistine came forward morning and evening for forty days, and took his stand.
1SA 17:17 Then Jesse said to David his son, "Take now for your brothers an ephah of this roasted grain and these ten loaves, and run to the camp to your brothers.
1SA 17:18 Bring also these ten cuts of cheese to the commander of their thousand, and look into the welfare of your brothers, and bring back news of them.
1SA 17:19 For Saul and they and all the men of Israel are in the valley of Elah, fighting with the Philistines."
1SA 17:20 So David arose early in the morning and left the flock with a keeper and took the supplies and went as Jesse had commanded him. And he came to the circle of the camp while the army was going out in battle array shouting the war cry.
1SA 17:21 And Israel and the Philistines drew up in battle array, army against army.
1SA 17:22 Then David left his baggage in the care of the baggage keeper, and ran to the battle line and entered in order to greet his brothers.
1SA 17:23 As he was talking with them, behold, the champion, the Philistine from Gath named Goliath, was coming up from the army of the Philistines, and he spoke these same words; and David heard them.
1SA 17:24 When all the men of Israel saw the man, they fled from him and were greatly afraid.
1SA 17:25 And the men of Israel said, "Have you seen this man who is coming up? Surely he is coming up to defy Israel. And it will be that the king will enrich the man who kills him with great riches and will give him his daughter and make his father's house free in Israel."
1SA 17:26 Then David spoke to the men who were standing by him, saying, "What will be done for the man who kills this Philistine, and takes away the reproach from Israel? For who is this uncircumcised Philistine, that he should taunt the armies of the living God?"
1SA 17:27 And the people answered him in accord with this word, saying, "Thus it will be done for the man who kills him."
1SA 17:28 Now Eliab his oldest brother heard when he spoke to the men; and Eliab's anger burned against David and he said, "Why have you come down? And with whom have you left those few sheep in the wilderness? I know your insolence and the wickedness of your heart; for you have come down in order to see the battle."
1SA 17:29 But David said, "What have I done now? Was it not just a question?"
1SA 17:30 Then he turned away from him to another and said the same thing; and the people answered the same thing as before.
1SA 17:31 When the words which David spoke were heard, they told them to Saul, and he sent for him.
1SA 17:32 And David said to Saul, "Let no man's heart fail on account of him; your servant will go and fight with this Philistine."
1SA 17:33 Then Saul said to David, "You are not able to go against this Philistine to fight with him; for you are but a youth while he has been a warrior from his youth."
1SA 17:34 But David said to Saul, "Your servant was tending his father's sheep. When a lion or a bear came and took a lamb from the flock,
1SA 17:35 I went out after him and attacked him, and rescued it from his mouth; and when he rose up against me, I seized him by his beard and struck him and killed him.
1SA 17:36 Your servant has killed both the lion and the bear; and this uncircumcised Philistine will be like one of them, since he has taunted the armies of the living God."
1SA 17:37 And David said, "The Lord who delivered me from the paw of the lion and from the paw of the bear, He will deliver me from the hand of this Philistine." And Saul said to David, "Go, and may the Lord be with you."
1SA 17:38 Then Saul clothed David with his garments and put a bronze helmet on his head, and he clothed him with armor.
1SA 17:39 And David girded his sword over his armor and tried to walk, for he had not tested them. So David said to Saul, "I cannot go with these, for I have not tested them." And David took them off.
1SA 17:40 And he took his stick in his hand and chose for himself five smooth stones from the brook, and put them in the shepherd's bag which he had, even in his pouch, and his sling was in his hand; and he approached the Philistine.
1SA 17:41 Then the Philistine came on and approached David, with the shield-bearer in front of him.
1SA 17:42 When the Philistine looked and saw David, he disdained him; for he was but a youth, and ruddy, with a handsome appearance.
1SA 17:43 And the Philistine said to David, "Am I a dog, that you come to me with sticks?" And the Philistine cursed David by his gods.
1SA 17:44 The Philistine also said to David, "Come to me, and I will give your flesh to the birds of the sky and the beasts of the field."
1SA 17:45 Then David said to the Philistine, "You come to me with a sword, a spear, and a javelin, but I come to you in the name of the Lord of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have taunted.
1SA 17:46 This day the Lord will deliver you up into my hands, and I will strike you down and remove your head from you. And I will give the dead bodies of the army of the Philistines this day to the birds of the sky and the wild beasts of the earth, that all the earth may know that there is a God in Israel,
1SA 17:47 and that all this assembly may know that the Lord does not deliver by sword or by spear; for the battle is the Lord's and He will give you into our hands."
1SA 17:48 Then it happened when the Philistine rose and came and drew near to meet David, that David ran quickly toward the battle line to meet the Philistine.
1SA 17:49 And David put his hand into his bag and took from it a stone and slung it, and struck the Philistine on his forehead. And the stone sank into his forehead, so that he fell on his face to the ground.
1SA 17:50 Thus David prevailed over the Philistine with a sling and a stone, and he struck the Philistine and killed him; but there was no sword in David's hand.
1SA 17:51 Then David ran and stood over the Philistine and took his sword and drew it out of its sheath and killed him, and cut off his head with it. When the Philistines saw that their champion was dead, they fled.
1SA 17:52 And the men of Israel and Judah arose and shouted and pursued the Philistines as far as the valley, and to the gates of Ekron. And the slain Philistines lay along the way to Shaaraim, even to Gath and Ekron.
