Names of God; part 19. The compound names of YHVH …

Class Outline:

Title: Names of God; part 19. The compound names of YHVH … "I am _______."

Compound names of YHVH. “I keep on being that which I keep on being.” The compound provides the “that” of which He always was, is, and will be.

YHVH yireh (He has, is, and will always provide). On this very hill God would provide is only begotten Son as a sacrifice for the sins of the world.

YHVH roph’ekha (who keeps healing you) or YHVH your physician. Rapha = physician, but added is the suffix kah - the singular “you” or “your”. I was, am, and always will be your personal Physician.

To commemorate the victory, Moses built an altar and called it YHVH nissi, YHVH is my banner.

Gideon called Him YHVH shalom, YHVH is peace.

Ezekiel prophesied that the name of the future city would be YHVH shammah, "Yavah is there" an assurance of divine presence.

YHVH tsbaoth [tsev-ah-oat], Yavah of hosts, is His divine, heavenly title. The psalmists and the prophets use it frequently, often implying that the hosts are angels who do God's will (cf. PSA 89:5-8; 148:2).

YHVH roiy [ro-ee], “the Lord is my Shepherd,” PSA 23:1.

This is another passage which I love to read to myself and aloud to you, though you know it well. It is timeless and applies to almost every day in our lives.

PSA 23:1 The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want.

Later, the appearing of this Shepherd would be announced. Isa 40 is the beginning of the salvation part of the book.

ISA 40:1 "Comfort, O comfort My people," says your God.

ISA 40:2 "Speak kindly to Jerusalem; And call out to her, that her warfare has ended, That her iniquity has been removed, That she has received of the Lord's hand Double for all her sins."

ISA 40:3 A voice is calling, "Clear the way for the Lord in the wilderness; Make smooth in the desert a highway for our God.

All three synoptic gospels identify the voice of vs. 3 as John the Baptist.

As we know, Israel rejected their Messiah. The majority did not heed John's call. And so, the fulfillment of this prophecy would come spiritually to the church (not making them Israel) and finally it would come to Israel both spiritually and physically at the Second Coming of Christ.

ISA 40:4 "Let every valley be lifted up, And every mountain and hill be made low; And let the rough ground become a plain, And the rugged terrain a broad valley;

ISA 40:5 Then the glory of the Lord will be revealed, And all flesh will see it together; For the mouth of the Lord has spoken."

ISA 40:6 A voice says, "Call out."Then he answered, "What shall I call out?"All flesh is grass, and all its loveliness is like the flower of the field.

ISA 40:7 The grass withers, the flower fades, When the breath of the Lord blows upon it; Surely the people are grass.

ISA 40:8 The grass withers, the flower fades, But the word of our God stands forever.

ISA 40:9 Get yourself up on a high mountain, O Zion, bearer of good news, Lift up your voice mightily, O Jerusalem, bearer of good news; Lift it up, do not fear. Say to the cities of Judah, "Here is your God!"

ISA 40:10 Behold, the Lord God will come with might, With His arm ruling for Him. Behold, His reward is with Him, And His recompense before Him.

ISA 40:11 Like a shepherd He will tend His flock, In His arm He will gather the lambs, And carry them in His bosom; He will gently lead the nursing ewes.

Ezekiel, from within the Babylonian captivity, prophesies the Millennial reign of the Shepherd.

EZE 37:21 "And say to them, 'Thus says the Lord God," Behold, I will take the sons of Israel from among the nations where they have gone, and I will gather them from every side and bring them into their own land;

EZE 37:22 and I will make them one nation in the land, on the mountains of Israel; and one king will be king for all of them; and they will no longer be two nations [Israel and Judah], and they will no longer be divided into two kingdoms.

EZE 37:23 "And they will no longer defile themselves with their idols, or with their detestable things, or with any of their transgressions; but I will deliver them from all their dwelling places in which they have sinned, and will cleanse them. And they will be My people, and I will be their God.

EZE 37:24 "And My servant David will be king over them, and they will all have one shepherd; and they will walk in My ordinances, and keep My statutes, and observe them.

EZE 37:25 "And they shall live on the land that I gave to Jacob My servant, in which your fathers lived; and they will live on it, they, and their sons, and their sons' sons, forever; and David My servant shall be their prince forever.

EZE 37:26 "And I will make a covenant of peace with them; it will be an everlasting covenant with them. And I will place them and multiply them, and will set My sanctuary in their midst forever.

EZE 37:27 "My dwelling place also will be with them; and I will be their God, and they will be My people.

EZE 37:28 "And the nations will know that I am the Lord who sanctifies Israel, when My sanctuary is in their midst forever."'"

These find their fulfillment from the mouth of the Shepherd Himself.

JOH 10:11

"I am the good shepherd; the good shepherd lays down His life for the sheep.

PSA 23:1 The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want.

PSA 23:2 He makes me lie down in green pastures;

He leads me beside quiet waters.

The pastures of fresh and tender grass are where we lay at ease, where rest and enjoyment are combined.
